Check out the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro if you want a cheap ($30) yet decent (sounds better that Audigy 2 NX) USB audio device. Analog output is only 2-channel, but you can get real 5.1 via optical SPDIF. I've got two of these now, one driving my home theater (via optical SPDIF) and another up in my bedroom.

And as a side topic... why do people use 'building' a computer as a benchmark for computer skill? i.e. "My uncle is really good with computers. He even builds them!" Since when is connecting stuff together that was meant to go together a metric of skill?
I've 'built' one computer in my life (and to toot my horn: I built a manually clocked(pushbutton) 4-bit processor out of discrete components(transistors and wire))

wow i got mine today and i'm surprised! It sounds helluva lot better to me than the on board 97' does. Music sounds much more rich and the "virtual 5.1" does a pretty good job for what its worth. It aint as nice as my extigy but this will do for watchin a movie at work
