Xbox Media Center 2.0 and Touchscreen
The new Xbox Media Center is coming out (2.0) featuring full animation and a few other things including a complete clone of the 360 dash for xbmc. I was just about to buy a Xenarc screen for a touchscreen interface for my modded second modded xbox to put in my ford focus. I have looked all over the web and found no hard evidence for or against a touchscreen working with xbmc. I started on a xbmc car pc skin for use with a touchscreen mouse if it works. The skin is coming along nicely as I can use a mouse with it ok. I just want to know for sure if the touchscreen will work, if not xenarc, then lilliput or some other brand, which ever one works, will work for me. thanks in advance, PS if you have a touchscreen in your car that you are currently working on or whatever and have a modded box, or know someone who dose, take one second to test this, just hook up the usb either to a homemade port, or get a controller adaptor to usb like the one included with smartxx chips. I am hoping that it will be somewhat like plug n play, but obviously not exactly. In other words, it should hopefully be a general mouse and work. thanks for the help in advance.
It might also help if we bug, and help, the XBMC people for touchscreen support, because I know a few others who would like this as well, and once its confirmed that it works, many other people will use it and maybe there will be a GPS program written. One option for the GPS is Python, other is XDK.

thank you, I have already seen these but there is a problem. The first one you still need a seperate pc to use a browser to connect with xbmc and the interface really is not that good for use in a car, it is basically a scroller and files. The send forum are just people asking the same question and people coming back with thearies... no evidence. We need someone to actually try it, try it with a lilliput who ever has one, and another with a xenarc, I would but I don't have one and I'm not gunna fork out 400 dollars for something that may not work with my setup. Unless there is a 30 day return thing or something. Or is there any way to port the drivers? because the Xenarc comes with DOS, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS drivers. If there is a way to port it to actually work, I will help organize donations and what not to whoever can actually port them. Thanks in advance!

the biggest problem is creating touchscreen drivers for XBMC....which isn't a high priority for the creators right now. So far the only way you could use touchscreen with the Xbox is if you have Linux installed and running on it.

I know I have a pretty recent version of XBMC, and my touchscreen does not work with it. I wouldn't think they would program drivers for it and not tell anybody, that'd be a major task I bet. It would have to support calibration and all that junk too.
I still have yet to download and install the newest ver of XBMC but I'm sure it still won't work.

thank you for your help, I know now finally that someone has tried it thanks to you. That in mind, what touchscreen was it that you used? was it one with genaric drivers or like a Xenarc with specific drivers. I was also wondering about the Lilliput screen if I am to just build a comp instead (if I can't find a touchscreen for XBMC, or port the drivers). Is the Lilliput a decent screen, or should I spend the extra a go with the Xenarc, I don't really know the difference except the resolution max is higher on Xenarc and it has a composite in with video switch for something like a reverse cam. Just curious and stuff. I am going to at least wait till XBMC 2.0 is released in a few weeks as it has the 360 interface and they are in a feature freeze so maybe one of the developers would like to put one in their car and then would have a reason and motivation to create touch screen drivers for it! Just hopefull thinking is all i guess...

My touchscreen came from DigitalWW. It uses what seems to be the generic drivers.

I am really intrested in the skin you are making for XBMC
Can you show me some screenshots on your progress on the XBMC carpc skin? maby send me a test version?
I was also wondering if there is a way to auto open the last song/playlist when you boot/reboot the XBOX?

I've wondered the same. I'm thinking if not, it could probably be done with a script. I just have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to XBMC scripts.

This was the progress I had until I found out that the skin engine is completely different in most sense. I will have to redo stuff and add animation such as the spinning wheel, I will be working on a genaric Car PC one as soon as I recieve my screen (just ordered Lilliput 7 inch). should get it in a few days, then I will start over with a genaric skin with full animation, I would really like to port this driver, but I don't know where to start. I have a more recent screen shot, but I have to find it, or take another, but the new engine is out but not yet finalized. I would almost rather wiat till the 360 skin is out and edit that for car PC, the background, sounds, stuff like that... How SWEET would that be, a 360 interface in a car with a touchscreen interface for all your entertainment needs!
edit: oh and the last song resume thing has been done via a autoexecutable script through python, but I can't remember what it was or where to get it, but I'm sure Google can find it if you ask the right questions...

from everything i've ever read about xbox's and touchscreens and stuff (i had the car install of an xbox before as well), touchscreens won't work with xbmc, or any other dashboard for that matter (unless u get linux running on it as Tranman has said already, then again, with linux running, i dont think u can run dashboards anyway)
the touchscreens work by pointing to specific areas and using those to mouse click where u touched (very basic i know), the xbox doesnt natively use a mouse, therefore, how will it know where you've "clicked"? unless you can make yourself a driver for the xbox (good luck), i really dont think its possible
i know there are the ps2 mouse connect things, that theoretically u can use a ps2-usb connection for whatever mouse you want, but again, the mouse as far as i know doesnt work in XBMC, only the controllers do, so then a mouse or touchscreen is pointless
but then again, its been a while since i've toyed with xbmc, so i could be totally wrong altogether (making this a waste of time, lol)
