cellphones=the next carputer?
So I picked up a new Sony Ericsson w810i phone, this thing can do every thing that my carputer can with a 5 second boot up time, sure there would be challanges to convert this into a carputer, but it is soooo close.
MP3/MP4
Plays movies
Navigation
File system
Wireless networking
Bluetooth
Phone integration
voice recognition
voice recording
camera
constantly stable, no moving parts
Alot cheaper
Some new phones even have Nvidia graphic chips
Issues to over come:Storage capacity (my phone can hold 8 gig with the new memory sticks coming out, and hooking it up to a larger screen and maybe sound quality, will hook it up to my H/U to see how that is going but sounds awsome with headphones.

It has the potential to take over some sectors, but expandability may be the issue, if the large-screen issue is ever resolved. One issue I see with cell phone/UMPC-based solutions is having to dock your device every time you get in your car. Unless you have a dedicated cell-phone with dedicated service, you'll have to clip it in and likely connect several cables before you start your engine.

Every time something looks like it's about to obsolete CarPCs, car PC users add yet another piece of hardware/software into the mix that solidifies the CarPC's position. Currently, it looks like sign/plate recognition might be the next thing to keep PCs in the car.

i thought about doing something like this with my PPC6700 cellphone/pda, i've been thinking about wriing some software to let it be the front end, but somehow still plug into the car,(kinda let it be the computer) and have the touchscreen/gps/audio plug into it via some kinda of usb connection
just a thought.

I am hoping someone figures out a feasible way to do a low cost HUD.
Either that or hope for widespread commercialisation of electroluminescent film that we can install over windscreens.

all you'll need now is a bluetooth 5.1 DSP/amplifier, maybe a bluetooth touchscreen? how cool would that be?

Look at Phonecontrol.net 1.6 and the PPC plugin. I haven't had a chance to play with it. I believe I have to have a BT serial port set up in order to use Phonecontrol with my Cingular 8125 cell/pda. So far I haven't been able to get the BT serial port part to work. While trying to get PC.net to work the wizard installed Phonecontrol.WCEkeypad. It looks like it controls whatever frontend you chose.

i tried that, was having way to many problems,, seems it was not worth the aggravation(at the current time), i might try again later, but it is just to flaky for me right now(bt adapter from officemax)

Agreed, paid for a license even purchased the EXACT phone recommended, a SE T616. Everything sort of worked but the handsfree via bluetooth sucked LARGE. No phoco's fault, the drivers for bluetooth are terrible.
Hopeing with the W810i and bluetooth 2.0 built in, I will take another shot of Phoco, but there are no drivers for the phone yet from Zorro as it is a new model.

Here ya go
http://www.nav4all.com/site/IE/index.php
and this:
http://news.com.com/MapQuest+unveils...3-6056832.html
This part is kinda Big brotherish from the article above:
U.S. cell phone service providers are required by law to put location technology in new phones in order to help public safety workers find callers in an emergency.
Jack Bower @ CTU is gonna love this new feature, no more chasing the bad guys.
