Hi, guys.
I've been reading some forums on MP3car.com for a few months now
and I just registered today to share my experience.
I've installed the Innovatek's DVD-990 for a few days now and I must say
I'm quite enjoying it, even with a few flaws I noticed.
First of all, let's say that everything is working as described on the publicity.
Maybe not as good, but let's see more. It even reads JPEG pictures! (It's always pleasing to have an extra not mentionned in techs specs... makes me wonder... does Innovatek know about this...? Ha! Ha!)
I carry everyday my MP3 player, which is a Vosonic 6230 (120GB, yeah, 120GB, which also plays movies, pictures and multicard reader, TV out, etc. and mine is almost full).
The thing is, and I'm not surprised since the DVD-990 is not supposed to have a monster processor, but for the DVD-990 to recognize my MP3 player takes about 7-8 minutes, and even then, just like on SD cards, the folders and subfolders and sub-subfolders are all in the same list. So it's hard when you carry about 2200 albums to scan one by one each folder to reach the "Opera folder", by example. It takes a lot less time when I plug my Corsair 8GB thumbdrive, and takes almost no time when I insert one of my 1GB SD cards (This can look a bit weird, but I save a lot of time tranferring music from my MP3 player directly on SD (or make my girlfriend do it!), and then use SD. I rarely listen to 20 album simultaneously... even 2). It's all logical. Anyway, it works, so it's fine.
Secondly, the screen, when you insert a SD-card or plug a USB drive, is not very crisp (blue list menu), I have good eyes and I'm barely able to read the screen (same for the DVD subtitles). I tried setting up the contrast, the brightness, etc, but nothing will do.
The same thing goes for the DVD player. The image (I tested Clone Wars cartoon and Ocean's twelve Widescreen) is significantly better than the SD/USB menu, but still, I tried to increase quality with the settings, but neither this will help.
If someone knows any tips concerning this matter, don't hesitate.
But for a device this price, I'm already glad everything works.
Other than this, there's the TV that works just fine. I watched/listened the end of the hockey game last night between MTL Canadian and Toronto Leafs (CBC CANADA) when coming back from work, and it was a great picture and sound quality.
The radio sometimes will display (when broadcasted) the radio station information. (Too bad one can't install a wallpaper... the big blue screen feels a bit empty).
Also, it says it reads MPEG4, but not on SD or USB devices, and I read in the manual that it reads MPEG4 on discs, so now you know.
And the display at night is well and beautifully lighted ( DVD-993 owners, can you say this?

Just kidding, it's only my preference.
One thing I've learned, with this device, is: Be patient! Sometimes commands takes a while but always work.
Instructions manual relyability: none for the installation, the wires are not standard colors, it's all inverted, so don't rely on these infos.
For the rest, the device is intuitive, but the rest of the manual seems OK but still incomplete, you'll have to figure some "shortcuts" by yourself.
Hey, we're techies, aren't we?
And finally, the remote works fine. I've put it inside a neat plastic wrapping, so I almost never touch the DVD-990, so for a while, it's gonna look as new as when I got it.
OK, thanks for reading (this novel!), I tried to be as honest as possible, but if I'm wrong on one part or more, be nice enough to correct me.
Best regards,
Polyglot
