Once you have it hooked up, please check to see if you receive any RDS RT for radio text. It is the radio station playlist or other info being broadcast by the radio station. If it has it, you will get use to it.. especially when you are arguing with someone about who did the song and the title.. it is right there for you..

2. The Unit itself looks average. Maybe it will look nicer when lit up.

3. The manual is very simple and the wiring diagram and some info are not accurate.

4. There are actually 1 Video Out, 4 Audio Out (one for each channel), 1 Video In for Backsight (backup video camera), 1 Video In and 2 Audio In, 1 Radio Antenna In, and 2 TV antenna In (don't know why).

5. Backsight (12V) is to power the backup camera (I think). For Brake (12V), I guess we don't need to hook it up at all.

6. In manual, there is no mention of TV tuner, RDS-EON, Video In, backup camera, and system clock.

7. There is Preset EQ (Pop/Rock/Classic), but you cannot customize it. Loudness button is to boost bass, but again no customization.

8. In the manual, it says it can play DVD, but no mention of DVD-R or DVD+R.

I am awaiting my Installation kit to come in this weekend, and will update my review.

Did you get it hooked up yet...come on and let us know what you think buddy Tell us everything

Easy guys...my installation kit should be in tomorrow and I will put the radio in my car on Friday. If successful and I am happy, you will see some pictures!

Thanks..

I know some of the HUs that are in the UK and the US have different RDS specs and support if any.. Typically the EURO units support more RDS. I will wait for your install to see what it really brings to the table.. If it delivers as marketed, this might be a really great deal.

FYI: Summary of RDS Abbreviations:-

AF
Alternative Frequencies
A list of a station's frequencies in adjacent transmitter areas.

CT
Clock Time and Date
Data containing time and date information so that the receiver can display. Using this signal has the advantage over a self-contained clock in the radio that it adjusts itself to changes between BST and GMT (UTC) and it does not loose or gain time.

DI
Decoder Information
This signal allows for miscellaneous function in the radio to be controlled

EON
Enhanced Other Networks
Information transmitted giving the radio a cross-reference to other stations for Travel service and other features.

MS
Music/Speech
This allows for the relative levels of speech and music to be altered.

PI
Programme Identification
This is a station code used in conjunction with AF data to provide automatic tuning to the best signal for a chosen service.

PIN
Programme Identification Number
This signal identifies a given programme and allows the radio to turn itself (and possibly a recorder) on for that programme.

PTY
Programme Type Selection
A signal which allows for the selection of listening by one of 15 types of programme rather than by the station.

PS
Programme Service Name
A signal which enables the name of the station to be displayed.

RT
Radio Text
This allows information about the programme to be displayed by the radio.

TDC
Transparent Data Channel
This allows for data to downloaded via RDS.

TP/TA
Travel Service
These signals enable the travel information to be heard, regardless of the choice of listening.

DVD-990 review 2

Hi all, I spent the morning to install this DVD-990. In general, It is a keeper!

1. The unit in the dash: not very flashy, but match up well with my car's dash color.

2. I leave the Brake (12v) wire alone and am able to watch DVD while driving (not safe though).

3. The screen is kind of washed up so I have to boost the brightness/contrast to make it look better. But there is no way you can read sub-title because the screen is too small.

4. Sound quaility is good with "Loud" on. And there is AUX mode you can input A/V. TV tuner is there too but I wasn't able to get the good singal because I have only one TV antena to plug in.

5. Radio does have RDS function. Please see picture.

6. USB/SD card function is very cool. I plug in a 2GB SD card and it scanned quickly to start playing with very good sound quality. But it doesn't show ID tag or other information (maybe I don't know how to do it yet).

7. DVD plays fine. But you have to use remote's PBD button to go to Menu.

Overall, I like it and will put a roof-mount LCD monitor later on so my kids can watch DVD. I am not really into watching the DVD from the little screen, but being able to navigate through the menu from there would be nice.

Great to hear... Looks decent and very clean..

Does the RDS show the play list with band or title? You can find out who bradcast what RDS functions at http://www.rdslist.com/update.php and click on the frequency range of local stations.

Have you tried MP3s burnt to a DVD?

Among my local stations, only one shows the band or artist name, some others just show the station name, and of course, the rest just don't have RDS at all.

I haven't tried MP3 on DVD yet. But I found one thing I don't like: if I shut down the car while playing MP3 on SD card, and restart the car, the unit starts to scan all MP3 files and play the first one again.

I will update my review after I spend more time with it.

Thumbs up

Well the RDS is working the way I want.. A lot of stations will only broadcast their call letters if anything

I have seen that a lot of units will continue playing MP3s from the beginning after shutting off system.

Thanks guys. Glad to be able to help a little bit.

As for the button to open the CD slot...it is above the volume dial at its upper left corner. It is a mechanic lock system and the way to take off the face plate is kind of old....I afraid the plasitc will be worn out if I do this often. Like I said, the build quality is average....you cannot expect it to have Sony or other bid brand's quality.

You can find pictures you need from ebay:

Another complaint... sort of...the romote control can do a lot of things so it is not very user-friendly. Have to read mannual carefully.
