Installing an overhead monitor is not an easy job, and it varies based on your car model.
Here is a guy who put one in his Honda Ody:

which car do you have?

The Honda van was a good set of instructions. I am curious if the support beam is down the center of all roofs. It would be kind of bad if i cut the whole in the head liner and then the support wasn't there. Somewhere i read that you may have to take a thin piece of ply-wood and mount ot the support rails then mount the dvd player to that. One thing is that all i plan to mount is a screen not the entire screen/DVD combo.

That's the most tricky part for the installation. Lucky for me is that Honda Pilot (my car) has an OEM monitor kit to instruct me how to cut the headliner at the right place. Also it comes with a bracket to be screwed onto the roof, then you can mount LCD to the bracket. Unlucky for me is that the kit would cost me somewhere $70. I hope I can get it this weekend.
For your car, you may search your Jeep forums and find some tips. If you have a roof dome light in that place, you can simply take it out and mount LCD there since the bracket is there and power wire is there too. Most LCD monitor comes with dome lights built-in.

Thanks for the info, I will check tonight and see if there is a dome light and I may even drop it down and look at the rook support. I will let you know how it goes.

Overhead monitor installed
I took Friday off to install the 9" overhead monitor. The all time I spent was about 3 hours. Overall I am happy.
Overhead Monitor
---------------------
I odered one 9" widescreen monitor. When it got here I was disapppointed because poor build quality and there is no remote control even though manual says yes. The monitor has two Video In but no Audio In nor IF transmitter. But since my DVD-990 controls everything so Video is the only thing I really need.
DVD monitor kit from Honda
------------------------------
I went to a Honda dealer to buy this kit to guide me the installation. The kit has a paper template to indicate which section you should cut off from the headliner, and it has a bracket with screws to attach to the roof support beam. It turned out this kit is a big help. If without it, I would certainly mess up my car.
The only problem I encountered was my Monitor has a much smaller footprint then Honda OEM monitor. So I had to cut a small section and try to insert the big bracket into the headliner. Thank God I didn't cut a bigger hole to ruin my day!
Cables
----------------
I ran the cables from DVD-990 through glove compartment and A Pillar and over the headliner. It was much easier than I thought. I didn't use Video In 2 but thinking of making it available in the future in case kids want to play games and I want to listen to musics.
Overall Impression
-----------------
Kids are happy and I am happy. The initial picture on screen was a little bit distorted but after I adjust color/brightness/sharpness to a normal level, it looks great.
I am glad that I bought a widescreen monitor since it only blocks less one half of my rear view mirror and I can still see cars behind me without problem.
I noticed that the monitor shakes a little while I am driving, but kids are not complaining and I figure that is true to all overhead monitors in cars.
Originally I was thinking to let an audio shop do it. But if they don't have the OEM monitor kit to work with, they will have hard time to find the correct location for monitor and use home-made bracket. The result would be a less quality work. With OEM monitor kit, the rest became more manageable. But still careful planning is very important.
The way of my setup allows me to upgrade my monitor in the future very easily. But for now 9" widescreen is a very good size to everyone, even for who sits in the 3rd row.

A couple questions about the unit.
I'm seriously considering getting one of these but I had a few questions about this unit. Any clarification by you guys who already own and have installed these units would be greatly appreciated.
- Does the face tilt at all? I have an Element and the dash is quite slanted. I worry that I might get an unreasonable amount of glare. If it does indeed tilt, is it manual or motorized?
- What is the intended use of the USB port on the head unit? What kinds of devices can you attach? Hard drives? Ipod? Memory card reader?
- I understand there is no actual subwoofer output on the head unit. My car has a built-in amp that requires a non-fading subwoofer output. Any recommendations on how I might connect it? Sorry if this is a newb question.
Thanks!

Don't buy this unit
1. It doesn't tilt
2. USB is for reading mp3 files in the usb key.
3. There are better units on the market now.
FYI, yesterday I found out the latch which locks the detachable face was broken, after only about 10 days. Initially I noticed the volume dial won't work sometimes -- that's because the latch was partily broken at that time and the detachable face's connection to the main unit was problematic.
If you read my reveiw earlier, you will know that I've got what I wished for. Guess I have to watch my mouth carefully!
I am in the process of getting exchange or possible refund with mp3playerstore.com, but don't know my luck yet.
Better models are showing up on the market so stay away from this one.

i was/am thinking about this unit...for a back-up cam/dvd player/mp3 simple solution...and feed my headrest monitors and soon to be overhead monitor..funny thing is even zoomed up on the unit i can't read the text in mp3 mode..hahah..wow
in your picture with the overhead 9" playing...is the video playing on the head unit,,doesn't look like it
what models do you recommend when you say there are better ones??

Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for the info, Crawfish! You've likely saved me hours of frustration followed by hours of disappointment.
Sorry to hear about the problematic detachable face (I did read that in your previous post). I hope your refund goes well.

I say... Not bad, pretty much what I expected.
I also recently purchased the Innovatek 990 DVD4 and installed it in my 94 Mustang GT. I have to say, for the price it really is not that bad of a unit, I see there are some weak points (hinges) so as with any flipface I am pretty cautious while opening the face. This car is pretty much for show, not a daily driver. The angle of the dash is slight, so my kids can see it fine from the backseat perfectly. and it plays all my DVD "backups" flawlessly.
It has been in use for about a week now and I have not had any issues. I am pretty happy with it. I do not see anything to date that can compare on the market. Boss has a unit with a smaller LCD (2.5 I think) and thats about it.
I already have the Boss PLTVD158 (no LCD) installed in my RV for over a year, no problems... but it does not have as many features as this DVD990.
Its like someone said earlier in the forums here... its NOT a Sony, or Pioneer, its an off China brand. For the price and with the speed of technology.. if in a year, If there is a better one out, I will replace it.

Good choice...a friend of mine bought a dvd990 from mp3playerstore and that unit was well worth it and he's very happy with it, and another friend bought 2 headrests tan in color with the 8" monitors I myself went ahead and bought the DUAL 7" touch screen for 499.00 at best buy and that's with a four year warrenty & free installation. 2 weeks After i made this purchase i saw my buddy's dvd990 and said to myself i would have been happy with it myself and saved a couple of bucks. My unit does not play divx, vcd, or svcd but it play's dvd +/-r & rw dvd mp3, cd, cd mp3,& wma. I will not be making anymore vcd's or svcd, or divx cd's... why waiste the time compressing a movie to vcd, svcd, or divx hence i can keep the qaulity and burn it straight to the master the DVD DISC she say's yeah baby put on that dvd ...and the folks behind me at the red light goes oh my gosh what's on that disc LOL

Compatibility
This is probably a stupid question but I am in a hurry so I am willing to accept the criticism. Anyways can someone tell me if a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe is compatible with a Innovatek 990?
Thankyou, I await your criticsm and hopefully an answer.
