INNOVATEK DVD-990 All-In-One... Wiring Help???
Hi, I have recently bought a INNOVATEK DVD-990 All-In-One indash unit. It is a dvd/tv tuner/cd/mp3 player.
There are a couple of wires which I dont know what to do with. One is called 'Backsight' (12v) and the other is called 'Brake' (12V).
What should I connect them too? Or can I leave them and not connect?
thanks
james

Backlight would be the backlighting of the unit and requires 12v.
Brake goes to the e-brake.
Innovatek's mnanuals must really suck balls.. Either that or you are just ignoring that lonely bundle of paper that's lying on your floor....

DAMN DP, and you answered the question. I would have sent him on his way to the Innovatek website, or forum. You are actually getting soft on the noob stupid questions.

Also the instructions are as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

Use some common sense, though. These are cheap units out of China made by Chinese with no comprehension of the English language. They say BACKSIGHT, but I'm pretty certain they mean BACKLIGHT. There's no other common English word that fights the context.
Someone else told me that Innovatek's manuals are ****, too. And the chopcolate firewall analogy was a damn good one...
My guess is that both those need a 12v line. The backlight might be better suited to an ACC or even the headlight line, so the backlightling comes on when you turn on your lights.
The e-brake wires into your e-brake to prevent you from using the unit unless the e-brake is applied. It's a safety/legal feature. I'm pretty certain it will work just fine (and while driving!) if you don't wire up the e-brake line, although I'm not 100% certain on that.

Yeah, I was going to say 'Backsight' would mean 'Reverse' to me. I don't think i've seen any type of headunit or screen where the 'backlight' of the screen was powered seperately from the unit.

Ahhhh.
I stand corrected, then. I wouldn't identify BACKSIGHT with that.
Sorry if I created any confusion.

Carefull... My screen's (Sp-716) e-brake wire gets hooked to ground. So, I have it tied in with the actual ground wire, so it works regardless of e-brake position. I think a lot of screens are this way...

Whoa, yes, ZtH01 is correct. The 'ebrake' wire should be attached to GROUND. Not 12v. You will need this wire connected to ground (or the ebrake wire) for video to work.
The 'Backsight' wire should probably only get hooked up if you have a reverse camera.

I'm not doubting this, since I have never used one of thse units.
But I have to wonder... Why would anyone label a wire EBRAKE 12V if it is designed to be connected to a ground? Soemthing seems horribly wrong there.

The directions that it sounds like this guy has are about the same caliber as most of the 'non-brand name' alarm systems and remote start systems i've installed. You're better off burning the instructions and dancing in their ashes than anything else..
I don't know of any eBrakes that put out 12v when activated, unless they want you to find the 'BRAKE' bulb, but even that is probably GND switched.

Hi, thanks for all the comments.
I managed to find someone (via ebay) who had bought and fitted the same unit as mine.
They had wired the Brake 12v wire to the car illumination wire. They said that the dvd/video only works when the cars headlights arent on.....
I am am guessing that if the wire is not connected at all, I should receive video/dvd etc all the time.?
Strange hey...

Connect the wire labeled 'Brake 12v' to ground. You can even wire it to the black ground wire of the radio.
The reason they're only seeing video when the lights are off is because their headlight switch shows ground when the headlights are off.
If you leave the wire disconnected, you'll NEVER see video.
