Question durable of a carcomputer ..

Hello,
I have a overall question on all of you guys. Im in the middle of deciding if I should get me a $800 doubleDin car radio with touchscreen OR put the money in a carcomputer.

I'm a computer tech, so i'm pretty in the carcomputer but i have one issue.
I don't want to fix every month something else on my (maybe/future) carcomputer.

so to you guys out there, how many time did u had to fix ur carcomputer? what time frame? and what parts will go out every 6/12 month that I have to count in ???

thanks

Mine has been in my truck for about 6 months and I haven't replaced anything.
others have had their systems in longer than mine and replaced nothing, either.
Reliability isn't an issue if you do things properly.

I have only used Lilliputs. I liked them so much that I started recommending and selling them as well. It is the best fit in a 350Z among others.

2 rock solid setup.
The only time I have to fix something is replate the BIOS battery. There are sometime I have to fix the problem I caused.

I have not had a hardware related issue.
Once I had a loose connection... other that that nothing.

I run lower power/heat parts and get very reliable results.

You really should search around the forums to see what others have said about that brand.

I'd also recommend perusing the FAQs, as there is a wealth of information about every major brand of touchscreen for in-car use.

If you arent computer retarded you should build a carputer, you just got to keep it maintained sometimes. Common-sence plays the biggest role for me.

i'm fixing it to make it into a carputer. I'm in Thailand and it gets plenty hot and humid in homes here (most people don't use aircon) and these things keep chuggin along. Cases are left on the floor where they get kicked and dusty. A car is a setp up if you ask me. As long as you put things in correctly and take the necessary precautions to keep it away from a leaky trunk or direct heat from the engine compartment, there is no reason it shouldn't survive. Heck, i'm doing in car testing and it's jsut a pile o'electionics on my floor, no skips, shorts or any problems while driving.

Thumbs up

Thank you for your respond guys. I researched the forum the last 5-7weeks and I didn't had a good picture of the durable of a touchscreen and overall repair of a carputer.

I think I will give it a try and hopefully everything will sound perfect. I'm very picky with the sound quality.

3 Amps (highs, midds, and lows), Soundblaster Extreme soundcart are planed via a P4/AMD and lilliput 7" and live music library update (bluetooth) when the vehicle is parked at the house. GPS maybe a good point later on.

Its a 2000 Mercury so I got a little space for the parts.

I've had mine 3+ years I believe not too sure. Screen went bad, dvd drive also but the carputer itself is rock solid.

edit; so what I mean is get quality parts and you'll be fine.
