a/d/s 346cs
I recieved a set of a/d/s 346cs 6.5s and man are they freakin huge.
They have a depth of a little more than three inches.
I am replacing my set of kenwoods up front with them, and moving the kenwoods to the back.
The kenwoods were roughly 1.5 inches deep, and that almost touches my window (the glass) inside my door.
I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion on how to mount these babies. (preferably someone who has mounted big 6.5s in their civic before, but others are welcome to comment)
I've seen the qlogic kickpanels and don't like the idea of paying that much for them.
Do you think it would be okay to mount the speaker to the plastic of the door itself? Or would that cause crazy vibrations.
I could easily use my dremel, cut a hole in the door (where the stock speaker grill was) mount the speaker with the new grill and be done with it.
suggestions, yay!

Ya been there done that. I had a civic and the depth was a problem. If you are not too worried about looks you can mount to the outside of the plastic and use spacer rings. It will look kind of ghetto though. What year is it?
I remember another time a customer wanted me to install Alpine type R's and those babies were huge. He diodn't want to spend the extra moeny to make it look nioce so I went with the spacer method.
To make it look nice I would seriously consider fiberglassing your door or going the kick panel route. As long as you have to customize I would lean more towards kicks. Its farily easy to fiberglass kicks and carpet them. Then you don;t have to worry too much about making sure they are perfect. If you construct kicks and mount the tweeter with them, tweeter goes below the woofer, not above. It will help with imaging.

heh i've got an 01 civic.
Yeah It would look a bit ghetto if i just hacked a whole in my door and put a grill on it lol. Of course whenever things come in the mail, i'm always pressed on time. Pretty soon im going to repaint my doors completely black, so it actually may look okay with the black speaker grill.
The only problem I see with doing that is that imaging would be a serious problem. Unless I fiberglass a mount for the 'woofer' it will face directly away from the door. The tweeter however comes with a special mount that I could use, and It would be pretty easy to mount properly.
How essential is it that the woofer is aimed towards the ears?

It depends...
Mine fire directly away from the door too but mine are only playing frequencies in the range of 50-150Hz. So no vocals...
For a basic setup you should be fine, but if you are like me and want the vocals to sound properly placed or imaged you need time correction or you need to physically equalize the distance the drivers are from your ears-that is what kick panels do. Take a measuring tape and measure for yourself to see what I am talkign about. Measure were they are at now and then measure where they could be int he kcik panels. You will see the kick panel distances should be fairly close to equal...or at least better than the door location.
When I speak of imaging I am talking about where the vocals sound like they are coming from as well as other instruments. In a regular stock system, the music sounds like it is coming mostly from the drivers side. When you have a properly imaged system, the sound/vocals are placed in the center of your dash/windshield.
Some sounds can be localized or you can "har" which direction they are coming from. Some can't. Here is some info that may or may not be useful for you.
<~150-200Hz are hard to localize (no vocals) You will start to hear vocals around 150Hz
200-6KHz are easily localized and those mostly affect your imaging
>6kHz its harder to place those sounds

Well they are mounted into my doors, the plastic cover on my crossovers rattles way too much, i need to mount it down better. The woofers ended up facing directly away from the doors, in the stock 6.5 speaker location. The tweeters ended up on the removable panel, that covers the screws for the side view mirror.
So far it seems great, with one exception. The tweeters are too loud. When I get a chance im going to set the tweeter 'gain' to -3db and see if that is even noticable.
Have any suggestions on how to get these tweeters a little quieter?

Use the -3db setting or you can try angling them off axis (not pointing at your ears) As you vary the angle they are relative to your ears, it will reduce the high end frequency response. Pointed directly at your ears is 0deg, but angling them by 30-60deg will reduce frequencies above 10-20KHz.
Or you can use a nice 31 band EQ and reduce that way as well.

Yeah I already have them fired about 35 degrees off. My crossovers are showing, they are in the door compartments its hard to get to the little -3db switch, but I think i'll manage. During lunch i'll go try that. Thanks for the suggestions

I have all of the files at my house, and unfourtantely can't rdp to my desktop from work. I'll check and post when I get home.
With one of the 31 band equalizers I tried with would cause the audio to clip on regular intervals about five seconds apart.
It was really irritating, and I couldn't figure out what was wrong.
I didn't give it that much thought, but enough to make me irritated that it wouldnt work
