Exclamation CarPC stopped working.

Hello, I've had a carpc working for at least a year now and it stopped working while driving.
Situation:
Driving on highway, listening to music, and not sure if I clicked next song or what, but it just locked up. Music stopped playing and could not do anything with the PC.

Anytime I try to boot it up now, nothing happens. The Opus turns on, the mobo is getting power(light on mobo) but the cpu fan never kicks in.
Any ideas?

Some specs:
Opus 150watt
Asus a7v133
AMD Thunderbird 850mhz
Generic PCI video card.

Edit:
Forgot to add my conclusions.. It seemed that just the remote power cable thing came loose, but i checked the connections and they are fine.

Have you bothered to hook it up to a regular power supply?

No with the setup I have, the pc is in there pretty good and i'd have to rip it apart to take it out.

If the fan doesn't kick in, then something is wrong during POST.

My first suggestion would be to remove the RAM completely. Then try to boot it. It should make some beeping noises and do nothing else. Try with another stick of RAM, and see if it gets further.

Um, no. Just because the computer is getting power doesnt mean it is powering up at all. He stated that the CPU fan never turns. Sounds to me like a board gone bad or perhaps the power switch failed.

Turn your power supply on, use a flat head screw driver to short out the power switch pins on the motheboard to force it to turn on. If it doesnt turn on your next step would be to verify that the PSU is powering properly by swapping it for a standard powersupply.

Most commonly it is either the PSU or the Motherboard that has failed but since you get no CPU fan spin sounds to me like a power or power switch problem.

do you hear the hard drive spin up?

If the fan is no go then it definately hasn't gone past POST. Could not even be turning on at all like you said. But what I was saying was that it could turn on, and right away fail testing so it stops. My epia board always has the fan going, but I have a couple of P4 boards that the fan doesn't spin up until after POST due to energy efficiency. It waits to get a temp feedback from the cpu, until it turns on the fan.

It just died randomly. A frozen computer is usually memory related. Motherboards almost never go bad with proper treatment. PSU is the next most likely thing. He said he didn't want to take apart the PSU, so RAM would be a good starting point.

I do my fair share of work with computers...

The best thing would be to simply pull the computer. I know it is a pain in the butt but that is part of the hobby. Start with using a desktop powersupply. If you have no power still, try swapping memory out and the last would be a motherboard.

The mobo is not turning on at all, no hard drive activity, no cpu activity, and no activity to the LCD screen.

The light on the mobo always stays on as long as the power supply is plugged in (doesnt matter if switch is on or not).

I will try shorting out the two pins to see if I can get any activity. If it does turn on.. then I can assume the problem resides in the Opus. How could that be fixed?
If I still don't get any activity after shorting out the pins, I can assume the problem relies on the motherboard.. which doesn't sound fixable.

Thanks for the help, I can probably try it late afternoon tommorow.

Is your harddrive connected directly to the power supply? Do you not hear it spinning up at all? If you don't hear any spin on your HD there's something wrong witht he 12v rail, which more than likely would point to the power supply.

That was a planning mistake on your part I guess. You are gonna have to try a normal power supply and if you can, replace part my part until you get the thing working so you know which part is faulty

Mine also locked up a few times. not sure it is the hard disk or psu. but i have a manual button to reboot the pc. hold it for 5 sec it will hard shut down and reboot.

i like the idea auto + manual button . the psu just send a signal to pc and nothing else you can do if you don't have a manual button

Your chances are 50 - 50 psu vs mbo. Diagnostics can be as simple as trial and error. You have two options so start with what you can test, start with the PSU. Either way you need to pull the PC. I'm SURE you have a desktop Pc you can use the PSU out of.

On a flip note, if you run your power from the batter to a switch to your PSU you have a reset button, simply flip the switch, killing the power, and flip it back on. Your PC will cut off as if you pulled the plug, and then turn it back on

I will try hooking up a normal power supply to the motherboard but won't be able to until two weeks probably.

I'll post back then.

Two Weeks! Man, thats a long time to wait for a test....

In the mean time, have you tried resetting your BIOS? That could be a possible cause...
