need a little advice/guidance

OK, so at some point I was building this dream CarPC, that could do everything from play MP3s to controll your lights/windows and anything else, well I ahve come back to earth and started putting togeath a shoping list and a rough layout of what I want for this system. here is what I have and what I want to do with it....

I want to put a IR controlled HU in with an IR transmitter over the IR reciver on the HU, the transmitter will be connected to the CarPC (laptop) to send signals to the HU.

I was thinking I would hook the LT to the HU via an Aux input on the HU and let the HU controll all the Volume and amps ( I feel this would remove the pop nosie during the LT start/shutdown ) I'm not sure of the placement yet of the HU either indash accessible or trunk/glovebox un-accessible, if I make it unaccessible I would want the PC to controll the Volume via the sound card which would mean hooking the HU to the LT, And this is where I am looking for the guidance....

I will be using the SB audigy PCCard or the Live external (not sure yet) but, could I run the Pre outs to the PC card/live and then to the amps. set the head unit on a median volume and controll all the volume from the LT...
Basicly I am using a HU for the Raido features, although I am leaning towards a full function HU with CD/DVD/MP3 and Sat which would mean that the LPT is an Aux and would have it's volume set to a median level, but this would mean I maynot be able to here any GPS directions and such unless I was on Aux, so If I was listening to the head units features/tuners I would only be able to SEE the GPS directions and not hear them.

Can anyone understand what I am talking about, and if so give me any Ideas

He has a laptop. He wants the laptop to be able to control the headunit.

Your first task is finding out how hard it is to control a headunit from a PC.

this is like controlling your dish receiver thru a media center pc with the help of an ir transmitter to automatically change channels and record shows.

it can be done, there is a free program called HIP or pay some money and get Girder. you can controll everything in your head unit thru pc this way.

search for hip or girder. you will need MCE ir transmitter/receiver also and a remote.

Actually I have all the controll of the Head Unit worked out, my question is more like which would be a better way to hook up the speaker system...

1. have the Headunit run in to the computer and the computer then connected to the amps, and lastly to the speakers

or

2. Have the Computer plugged up to the head unit By way of the AUX port on the Head unit... allowing the Head unit to control all volume, fading, and power-up of amps.

With option one I will have the pop that comes through the speakers and amp, when the sound card service is started, But I will be able to here the GPS over top of MP3s/radio/CDs/or what ever, I will also be able to control all the settings from one location by way of grinder and other Apps on the PC.

with Option 2, the head unit will controll the amps and volume which would stop the poping that the computer would generate, but I will not be able to have the GPS over the radio/whatever... either way is fairly easy to set up, and controll of the headunit/PC would basicly be the same
