everytime this comes up, I have to recommend this product:
http://www.lascointl.com/safety_film.html
It turns your tempered glass (passenger, rear) windows into safety glass (front windsheild) windows. Damn near impossible to get through.
I found this stuff when I was looking at bulletproofing my truck a couple of years ago in order to prevent something like this from happening.
It's not as expensive as you'd think, only $5.25 SQ/FT....which came out to be about $100 for my truck. Alas, I never got the stuff because I was going to replace my rear/side windows at some point.

no, its not bulletproof, but it will stop bricks, lead pipes, brass knuckles, or anything else somebody might try to use to break out a window to steal something.

I have a feeling that stuff will end up looking like a do-it-yourself tint job. Bubbles and such.

Looks really good but for me there are a few probs:
- first its not allowed in europe/germany because its not validated by authority.
- second my windows are already self tinted
-tird : what happens when you have an accident and the police / rescue forces have to break the windows to take u out ?
damn i wish laws for car wouldnt be so strikt here!

That seriously sucks. If that happened to me, the immediate concern of the police would not be finding the thieves, but preventing me from finding them first.
I third (fourth?) the camera idea. A set of wireless camers, connected to cheap B&W TVs in various spots in your apartment will go a long way preventing problems. Hide the cameras in the headliner, and use a pinhole lense. Nearly impossible to detect. If there is any suspicious activity, simply walk into the parking lot carrying a trusty old double barreled Remmington...Staring down those barrels would make anyone **** their pants.
Also, make it known to everyone in the apartment that you are fed up, and have just joined the NRA, started learning Karate, have installed traps, etc. Join Fight Club. Get a bumper sticker that says "Guns don't kill people....I do".

heh
You know...this is all very interesting now that I think about it with talk of alarms and stuff to let you know if your car is being broken into. I had a roommate in college who I caught in the act stealing some of my computer stuffs (an Ethernet switch). He tried running out to his car with it (to drive away or something maybe?) but I tackled him and punched him in the face a few times before he let go of it finally. I called the police, and they came and talked to him and me, and as it turns out while he was in the act of thefting my stuff, the police said I was guilty of assault as well. It ended up that he just gave us a warning and said we should try to get along; so much for any help from them. He said he could have cited us each $300 as well as other charges.
The point is, I'm sure this could apply to someone breaking into your car. Even if your alarm goes off, and they grab your carputer and big 85" LCD display and casually walk away with it right infront of you, it seems that you cannot legally apply any reasonable force in taking back your property without facing charges yourself. That is how the officer explained it to me, anyway, and the only solution is to let them take it, and then call the police and allow them to try to regain your property.
Any thoughts?

Yes and no...
You are allowed to use a "resonable" amount of force to prevent/protect yourself. No DA will prossecute you for stopping someone from stealing your stuff if you wrestle them to the ground and maybe throw a few punches. Shooting them however is a different story. However the same goes for if you are caught stealing something and you are put in a situation to defend yourself...you can use a "resonable" amount of force to protect yourself.
You see it all the time on those police videos. Some guy tries to rob a gas station, but the clerk fights back. No DA is gonna prossecute the clerk. Most states give concurrent sentences as well...so the greater of the crimes will set the lenght of the sentence. A few do consecutive sentences where you would serve time for robbery, assault, tresspassing, etc. So if for some reason you do get caught in a robbery, swing away if someone attacks you...you will only do time for the robbery most likely.
Anyways, yes you could technically be charged with assault, but no DA would take the case. They are overwhelmed with much more serious cases that they have a chance at winning than to deal with something so minor. The policeman was right that you could get cited...but Im sure he didnt want to do all the paper work on something fairly minor. Its a bum case.

What about electrifying your car?? a few warning stickers should cover you from being sued.... just something like an electric fence... but then it would only work if they touched a metal part of teh car, but you could have your MP3box metal, and LIVE with all teh internals iscolated from the box.. hmm... lol

Hi,
I think gun is not a solution - the same for loud alarms. That don't scare most of those "bastards"( mostly the found the wires to cut before alarm is activated . So i would opt for a silent alarm.
I think also that hiding your stuff is the best you can do- No carputer inside stickers etc.. ) .
AND don't talk about your superb mobiole entertainement system.
Some good friends ok but not to everyone you meet.
For me only my best friends & family know what I 'm working on. Most of my CO-Students( don't know if it's called so)which I#m in good contact with don't know about my carputer stuff.
On my next car -my clio is actually dieing , I'll build some little self made alarm with one of my old GSM phones . So that it would also be possible if the car is stolen to track it. I don't know but if a friend of mine is able to, i will ask him to programm me a piece of soft wich is mailing or SMS'ing me the actual position in Gauss-Krueger format or calling me etc... .
I'll also look that in my new car I'ld have a little space to hide my carputer stuff so that is integrated in the original car interior.
damn I would explain myself better if i oonly would have more vocabulary

If you had a DeLorean you could electrify the outer stainless steel panels I'm sure that their resistance would make them nice and hot though.
