P4's suck you are better off with a pentium M or a dualcore. P4's also eat a lot of power.

Athlon 1600+. Talk about a power hog.

What Liquid smoke said is right, aim for a pentium M or a dual core.

P4 with M2-ATX or OPUS is great. P3 with M2-ATX will do also. I have a Shuttle XPC with an AMD Athlon XP 2600 and it runs really well. P4 system is currently in my car.

not saying you are going to have problems if you choose a P4, its just in general a crap processor and was pretty much a big failure for Intel and as far as cars go its a worse choice because of the power it sucks and heat, you can get a more efficient processor thats faster and sucks less juice and prob cheaper too. If you use one, you wont likely have any issues, but you can do a whole lot better.

P4 here, and the only problem I have is that the engine has to be running or the power inverter wont allow the computer to boot up. The question was obviously a p3 or a p4. If it were between the 2, I would get the p4 for more power. Most front ends here are very graphics intense and the faster system the better. P3 will run nominally but a p4 will run crisp.

Well I actually disagree with the "frontends are graphic intensive". Many people including myself run on via boards with onboard video and the processing equivalent of less than a P3 700Mhz. I use RoadRunner and I have used some moderate flash skins and it works just fine. Screens load fast, and video is awesome. GPS works fine, and everything else including SNES/N64 emulators.

The P3 is more powerful than the via chips but of course power hungry. The P4's are known for their horrific efficiency. They are the worst chips in terms of power used to processing power ratio. I have four P4 powered systems alone in my house and they are great chips, but they are waaaaaay overkill for a car environment. And in climates where heat may be a problem, they are almost disregarded immediately.
