@shotgunefx

I finally got my APR and my standard dell PA-12 adapter won't turn the laptop on. it's the 65w PSU and I get the "PSU is not powerful enough to use this docking station." grrrr.

Is this the auto/air PSU you bought? link
I just want to check before I try to get him to ship it from the US. Does this charge the laptop at the same time? I know you have probably answered this earlier in the thread, but I thought that now you have had it running for a while you would have a definitive answer. If that is the right DC PSU. I am through with trying to scrimp and I am just going to buy it.

Sucks to hear it. My car isn't handy at the moment, but I looked at my ebay auction for it and the model number was the same "AA-C27H".

Everything appears to work 100% and while my trips in the car are usually short, and my rig does a lot of in and out, it appears to charge normally (it's never ran out while in the car ) and ACPID also indicates that it's charging. If you want to double check with him, ask, I did, that way if it didn't work as expected, I had an out

The only issue I ever saw was once, maybe twice, it misreported the battery level, but that was quite awhile ago.

If you want to wait til tomorrow, I'll discharge my rig tonight and leave it overnight on the car charger to triple check.

update Same seller too btw.

if you could check for me that would be awesome. I have contacted a few sellers that are selling car chargers for the inspirons and they have no idea. They just anwer the question with it's listed in the description that it works. They haven't really checked that it actually does work, let alone charge the battery.
If it charges, then I am buying one.

thanks mate.

thanks mate.

Took a bit, for one, had some problems disabling the hibernate on battery mods I did, or rather, all the files/programs I had to touch to get it to stop behaving the right way , I'd leave it doing something disk intensive to hasten the discharge only to come back and find it shut itself down.

Also the PS wouldn't work off my 12v 1Amp adapter so I had to find and charge my portable car battery to run it off that.

It's almost done charging now, so I'd have to say, yes it works

Didn't realize how quick it charges it. Seems to be between 0.8 and 1.2% a minute which is good considering I take a lot of short drives. Faster at first which is not suprising as most chargers do this IIRC.

Here's the question and answer from DS_Miller on ebay.

Hi,
Does this charge the battery and power the laptop (Certain Dells won't charge with unrecognized adapters, only power the laptop, the 8600 is one of them). The manufacturer said yes it will be recognized, but want to confirm this is your understanding.

Two, I want to run a dell dock and the laptop off of this. Dell requires a +90watt (equivalant to a PA-10 or PA-13) adapter for this (or the BIOS refuses to boot), they (mfg) said it was 90watts, again want to confirm that this will work for my application.

Thanks for your time.
Regards,
-Lee

Hello Lee,
We've sold many of these adapters for use in the Dell Inspiron 8600 and only had one return where the customer had purchased the auto adapter by mistake. Our customers have not had any problems with the adapter charging the battery as well as powering the laptop. As these adapters are guaranteed to be 100% OEM equivalent, you should not have any problems. And yes, we can confirm that this is a 90-watt adapter and is equivalent to the PA-10/PA-13. This adapter should work for your application both with the dock and the laptop.
Regards,
dsmiller_inc

AWESOME! Thank you very much shotgunefx. Sounds like a major PITA to test it for me. I really appreciate that you have put yourself out to give me answers to my questions. Next I will have to pester you about all those little mods

Now all I have to do is convince dsmiller_inc to send me one. Luckily if I can't, I have a few mates in the US that can help me out.

Finally, I can get this thing sorted.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Come on. Everyone knows muppets are like secretive about where they live. Something to do will all the fans.

Really I live in Australia.

I like the temperature a little warmer than that. Plus there are too many poms there and their beer is warm
