mp3.....boat?

My parents just bought a boat and I already have my wheels turning for a mp3 setup..

Since the boat has the extra room I am thinking something like an 8.4" touchscreen, hooked up to the current marine stereo that the boat came with.

Has anyone ever accomplished this feat? I still have to take the boat's din sized head unit out to see how its being powered. The boat as some ac outlets so I might use a noisy inverter. I'm thinking that the head unit doesn't have aux inputs, so it looks like FM Modulator is the only way here....
Just throwin ideas around.

Don't worry - I use the boat ALOT, I love that damn thing.

I would be really worried about water, marine stereos are almost waterproof, computers and touchscreens aren't, the first wet hand that touches it messes it up. You can by better Marine stereos, or use car ones. I have a 180 watt Jensen with Aux in for sale for 100$ if you want it.

Personally, I've always felt it was too noisy in my boat to even bother listening to the stereo. And I never really used it when the motor was off because I didn't want to kill the battery and have to paddle into shore

But, I guess it really depends on the type of boat and the way it's electrical system is setup.

Yeah - its a nice boat, the radio is down in the cabin, so thats why I wasn't worried about water, guess i'd just keep a towel next to the screen to wipe the hands...as far as using it goes, we do alot of fishing and just relaxing (and eating) in the water. We have two batteries, one in use and one in backup, so nothing to worry about there.

And, since I use the removeable HD tray, I would just purchase another one and it would make swapping the mp3s from car to home to boat real easy.

seems like the largest concern would be if you are on salt or fresh water.... salt will play havoc with unsealed elec. circuts.

Fresh water use should be much easier for long term use.

Be very careful if you are using it on salt water. My boat gauges all have this salty film on them, I can't imagine that would be good for non sealed electronics, like a computer and LCD.
