Remote starting manual transmission with the Audiovox CL100?

Hey guys I have a audiovox CL100 and am wondering what are my best bets to get the thing up and rolling with a remote starting module safely?

I know there are several supposedly compatible models that are audiovox specific, and I would much rather just go with one of these models if possible; as I have to get a car starter module anyway to make this work for me and this should make it easier in the long run.


Question is: will any “alarm system with remote starter capabilities” work with a manual transmission?

Or are there specific models that are more conducive to a manual transmission?

A neutral safety switch and engaged Ebrake switch will be a must if I am to do this obviously.

What is the legal standing on these manual start units? I have read contradicting answers, does anyone know what the official stance is? Also there seems to be cars out there set up for this from the factory with a stock neutral switch which can be used to disengage the system if in gear.

Is the telematics port a fairly universal thing? Or are they all proprietary to each specific brand?

As far as I am aware it is illegal to put a remote start on a manual. If the car does not have a neutral safety switch I would definitely not recommend it.

I had a remote start on my manual, and all it took was for someone else to drive my car and they left it in gear. When I remote started it, it took off down a hill and parked itself between two trees. Cost me over $1000 to fix the car. I was lucky though, considering no one was hurt. If the steering wheel had not been turned, it would have drove right into a gas main for a townhouse complex.

I have also heard horror stories of people with their cars in the shop and a mechanic accidently started the car and it drove off the lift.

I am not saying it can't be done, but unless you are SURE it has a neutral safety switch, don't do it. I took mine out after my incident.

Illegal if you put an automatic transmission remote start in a manual. Legal if you use one with the gear safety and parking brake safety. Then there is some jig you have to do when you exit. Something like Unlock doors, put car in nuetral, push a button, step on the brake, shut off the car, and then you have 10-15 seconds to get out of the car and lock the door. If the doors are opened either manually ot by keychain the remote start wont work. Basically it is the assurance that nobody has driven or gotten into the car to mess up the gears/brake. Then it will start.

That's is why nobody but me drives my car and when it goes for service, I through the manual disable switch!

That being said, I have a regular Audiovox remote start system made for automatics, but installed in a manual with no gear safety and no brake pedal safety. Only the hoodpin saftey (if the hood opens off it goes) and a manual toggle switch for when I take it to the dealer. Illegal as far as I know but I am very cautious with it.

Being a delivery driver, before I get out of my car, I push the remote start button while I am still in the car with the engine on, and then I take out my keys and the engine stays on. I get out and lock the car, and do my business all while my car is on (with the blinker and headlights for safety because usually I am parked on the road). Saves me a lot of time and gas by not having to start it each time. That and the computer is always on!

As for the CL100, yes it is proprietary. I have one, and it uses a 4pin wire that only fits into the "telematic" port on certain Audiovox remote starts and alarms. You need to be sure the model you buy has it. As I remember, most models vary by only 1 digit difference, and some have an "i" or other individual letter after it. This can make it seem cryptic to get the right model, but look at the manual for the one you want to buy and make sure it says that it can be hooked up to the CL100. You can get the manuals and installation guides for free from audiovox's website.

How does leaving the car on save gas? lol

Sure the RPMs spike for a split second when you start it, but if you idle the car for 3 seconds that's the same amount of gas. It's like people who think it saves power by leaving your lights on because they believe it takes so much power to energize the bulb that you're better to leave it on, but really unless you're leaving the room for like 1/18th of a second it's better to just shut them off.

Just do what I did and wire you car alarm to remotely start your alarm separately from the car. I have a button for the car, and a button for the computer. I can hit the computer button before I turn the key off, and it will stay on after I exit the car until the ignition is turned back on. That way the computer stays on, and I actually do save gas.

In my honda, the 30 seconds it takes me to deliver the food with the car at like 200rpm, is much less than to startup. Also less rough on the car. And if you deliver, you would appreciate the 3 seconds less it takes to get in and go then get in start and go. Just like it takes less gas to get going if you never really stop. The lightbulb thing is stupid, and I never even heard of it before.

And I can control my PC independant of the ignition line. Rarely do I use it though.

I have a remote start on my eclipse and its a manual, ive never had any problems... However i make damn sure that i leave it in neutral, because even with the brake set it will drag your car acrossed a parking lot... I field tested that just for *****s and giggles... if you do intend on installing it, the only thing you have to do is disconnect the switch on the clutch peddle...

This is the only country where there even is a switch on manual transmission clutch's. Go to any other country and start a manual car. You can do it with no clutch pressed in. Know why? Because if they are stupid enough to leave it in gear and start it that way, they blame themsleves, not the car manufacturer for letting them be stupid.

And you really tested your car starting in gear?! I would never have the courage to do that! Did you have to run after it?

THe way I installed my remote starter I left the switch connected, but let the remote starter trick the car thinking the clutch was pushed in. Then when I had the car at the dealer and they were replacing my starter under warranty, they said they couldn't get the car started. I later found out, they knew I hada remote starter and thought I had disconnected the clutch switch. Kind of scared me, because what would have happened if some idiot car porter decided to play with it?

On another note, I did chase my car down the hill when it remote started. Not fun. Man if I had a video...it would be on Youtube in a flash.

the only smart way I know of to install a remote start in a stick car is to use a compustar... they have a model SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for manual trans...

they use a reservation mode, & it is pretty much fool proof.... I've seen cars get wrecked with remote starts on a stick.... I would never do it any other way... remember, **** happens... no matter how careful you are... look up the definition of "accident"

I will definitely look into the option of going with a purpose built manual tran setup, but barring the fact that it may not work these are the models that seem to both have the telematics port as well as the ability to start the car remotely.

Whether this means that the option is applicable to the CL100s abilities to start a car remotely, I do not know as of yet, but will be getting in touch with an installer to ask a few questions.

??? what do you mean, that it may not work with your car? it will for sure, & it'll be foolproof... the only way to screw it up is if you perpously left the window open, set the reservation mode & then reached in through the open window without opening a door & stuck it in gear.... the ultimate in saftey would be to have all windows roll up when alarm is set, then it's really foolproof...

If you had hit the remote start button again, it would have shut off.

The APS-996A has telematics and remote start. The instructions show several options for manual transmission depending on what you have to work with. Remote start is pretty complicated with all the wires for brake, security bypass, clutch, neutral, starter inhibit, tach input, and 3 or 4 heavy guage wires.
