If it does need it, do I wire a 5v wire to the red wire and a ground to the uninsulated wire in there?

Ok this thing is still driving me insane, I wired it up as the instructions in the gml file said to. Got nothing, took it apart and found the orange wire is not part of the plug on the board so I figure the red is to be used. I can not figure if I need power or not. The cover says it is 12v but everyone here says it uses 5v, does anyone know which wire is for power? I imagine I can use trial and error to find which of the other wires to connect to the serial plug.
