I got mine off ebay, and then it took 12 days for the trip across the ocean. By itself it doesnt work with anything really...HOWEVER, with a tiny bit of soldering (4 wires) and some IR control program (we like Girder) it works with windows computers. Can't speak for Linux. I have used it on win98 and win2k.
And for anyone else needing to do the soldering...you only need to do pin 2,3,5, and 7. The rest are N.C. See Nemesis's file for the rest of the story.

What's this // port reciever?? more info about it?
Sorry if i miss something (Yes I read the tread before...)

This is mostly above my skill level. But the ON box is simply transmitting some serial data, as long as your usb adapter, and your program get along it should work...there are NO drivers for this device...therefore you can use whatever you want.
I only have the ON receiver. It does every button exept for the top 3, the volume rocker, and the +/-P rocker.
If you need those buttons, then you need a second receiver. The second one can be anything you wish, it is a standard TV remote at that point.
The entire Qwerty side and all the front buttons (other than the ones mentioned) work just fine with the ON receiver...
I quess the answer to your questions are..
You need the ON IR receiver. (I will take a picture tonight if necessary).
--you need to do some soldering mods on the end of the cable
In addition, for more buttons, you need another IR receiver.
--any standard receiver should work...a USB one for example...if your other ports are being used.
If Girder works using generic plugins, then WinLIRC should work.
I don't know of any substitute for the ON IR receiver(you may have to buy another off ebay, this time WITH the receiver)
It really works great, better than I expected to be honest. (and for about $15 us)

Good find - just received my controller/receiver/PSU through the post from that Ebay guy
Got the soldering iron out, I'll mod the serial plug some point today as per your instructions.

The unit has a regulator built in so you wont fry it providing you get the connections right, center pin = positive(+12V).
Do this first and see what you get on the serial port, use something like Hyperterm to see if you are getting any data if you are unsure.

When you took it apart, what was inside? Just a single IR receiver LED type affair? Is the casing mainly full of air or does it have a PCB in there? I wouldn't mind losing the case to hide the IR receiver in the dash somewhere, but obviously not if the case has a PCB inside or something, in that 'case' I may aswell leave it in the box.
I guess behind an air vent is a neat enough place.

Wouldn't this be a bad idea, since heat emits infrared waves? Seems like your receiver might be "blinded" when you crank the heat up during the winter.

It's a risk I'm willing to take, being the crazy risk taker that I am...
