i dont understand gps?

hi,
Im new to this site so please dont bite my head off i did try looking for a relavent thread but....
i know i must be the 1 millionth person on here saying this but i dont understand most of the stuff written in here about gps.

I have some electrical and computer knowledge but not enough to get my by when it comes to in car gps.

I have a laptop,(its old so now i have a blutooth dongle) I have a sirfIII bluetooth gps receiver. I want to run it in my car, i used to have a dell axim x50 that i put tomtom on but it continually crashed whilst driving and had to be soft reset.

Sooooo i (in my wisdom) thought put it on the laptop, but im finding it more difficult to do that than just buy a navman or mini gps unit. Unfortunately i love gadgets and not sure where to go from here, i tried dl mapmonkey as i was told there arent many apps for pc gps. but i couldnt get australian maps or it to connect to my gps receiver, again i dont know how to edit line command prompts or change the dialogue in the exe file, sorry i know i must sound like a whinging moron but is there a better way to go, or software that doesnt need a tech to make it work? I am prepared to spend a little bit of money but i wasnt looking at in dash unit with front ends or something like that i read about. heheh

any help/info would be great

thanks guys n gals

If you are from Oz, Destinator or Copilot are your laptop options. There is also ozi explorer, but that doesn't do routing. It just shows your position on a map. Also you have to buy the maps for destinator. the latest version is 1st quarter 2006.

As far as connecting your GPS, make sure that it is communicating with your laptop before you start Mapmonkey. Then check that you have selected the right com port in the MM setup.
