Topo Maps

I'm working on updating my Explorers Carputer and was wondering if anyone offers topographical map software. When you're off roading, knowing whats on the other side of that hill can be really useful.

Use Fugawi moving map software and the scan the most detailed paper maps you can find (military).

I've got a bunch of USGS and Corps of Engineers maps that I guess I could scan in. Man, that's going to take a LONG time.

How does this software you're talking about work? How does it know the maps scale?

Oh sure, even Teletype will do scanned in topos. But Topo 4 will do 3d. Man, that would look soooo cool. But I really dont get off the beaten path enough to justify the price (there is a discount for Atlas owners)

Yeah, it would be very cool. I've been looking into DeLormes Topo Quads. Those look good.

But I have localized trail maps for certain areas (Ouray, CO) and would love to use those.

You just have to give the coordinates of two or three known points on the scanned map. Then, the software automatically calibrates the map in order to be used as a moing map on the screen, calculate distances etc...
There are other programs like this like OZIexplorer and the simple and free GPSthing.
