Why can't WE have mapping software like THIS...?

The Japanese have all the fun! Fujistu Ten (Eclipse) has a double-din 7' head unit that has built in GPS, DVD, etc. Anyways- check out the TRUE "bird's-eye" view of the mapping software that Eclipse has put together, and they even put BUILDINGS in the maps. HELLO DeLORME!!??!! HELLO Garmin!!??!!
You'd think that will all of the clandestine-ish GPS mapping capabilities that our govt has (eh hum NSA, FBI, CIA, NSO), we'd be able to handle this level of mapping.
Anyways- what do you think? Useful or no?

Thats amazing! I suppose the software would have to be updated if they built another building, but I really would that kind of thing on my system (when i finish it)....

It would be even more amaing if the GPS up in space could send real time pictures to the GPS reciever, than you would be able to see a traffic jam before you drove into it....

still, thats probably a few years away yet.

The navigation systems in Japan are much more advanced than systems in other areas. They use a system called VICS to send traffic condition updates to the vehicles via FM sub-bands, cell phone hook-ups, and even IR transmission when your vehicle is under a stop light! In metropolitan areas the system will tell you where the minute by minute traffic congestion is.
Some of the navi systems will even tell you which parking lots are full.

That is nice functionality that I wish we would take advantage of or at least make some of the features a priority in the development of our mapping software. I think the most we get is construction delays and SOME traffic alerts via the CUE Traffic Net modules ( http://www.cue.com/products_services/trafficnet.htm ) .

In another post I started, Mercedes put a WiFi connection in their 320C and used it to update map information and download music.

I think in Japan WiFi is free everywhere just about.

My Pioneer DVD nav has some 3d views that make it look like you are playing a video game...but let me just say, its VERY HARD to follow directions with those views. I miss turns all the time, but they look much cooler than the normal overhead map modes. Its pretty sweet looking down and seeing all the curbs, medians, etc. on my little screen

Too bad it doesnt detect where other cars are on the road...then I could literally just drive on my 7incher instead of having to look through all those damn windows in my truck. Here I am having to do all that work like a sucker.

I love that Simpson's Episode where Homer is in the Ederly home and sees a guy on a wheel chair. "Here I am walking like a sucker." I can relate

because, the governmental mapping agencies (for instance IGN in France, check www.ign.fr -- warning, all in French) charges an arm and a leg for the cartography data

How do these compare VS the big name Car Audio's GPS systems, like Pioneer, Clarion, etc?

I am curious if the type of GPS systems like Pioneer, etc, is better than a computer based GPS system (Meaning running on a PC, with StreetAtlast or such software)

So interesting!
