iGuidance 4 Crashing Computer?

Hello all,

I just installed iGuidance 4 after having used 3 successfully for quite a while. After install, it loads fine but everytime I try to do anything like picking a destination, it crashes my computer. The computer will do an automatic reboot and then I will get the XP error message that Windows has recovered from a serious error. It happens whether I'm running iGuidance outside or inside of RR. Is anybody else experiencing this?

did you update any drivers ? are you using a usb, serial or Bluetooth GPS ? As I posted in the other thread, Blue Screens/Reboots/Total Lockups (which include mouse/keyboard) are normally signs of DRIVER or hardware issues. Software issues normally don't cause the OS to quit. The increased memory and/or CPU load from the new GPS software may have triggered the issue, but it's unlikely it's the "software" itself.

Thanks, Guino. No, I didn't update anything. I have 2 gig RAM, which memtest showed to be good, and P4 2.4mhz processor. I also guessed that it might be additional load from the new program and am going to troubleshoot on that basis. I'll report my findings.

I've had the same problem and figured it's Xport3 . Ever sinse I switched to different port splitter - it works as a champ.

Really? You mean iG3 worked with Xport, but iG4 didn't? Then you switched splitters and all was well? What splitter are you using now?

Thanks, Sonic. I doubt that it's Xport because it works fine until it gets stressed. I've finally concluded that it must be a faulty CPU, and I have a new one coming tomorrow. Hopefully, that will solve the problem and I won't need your exe. By the way, I did wind up getting the Coleman inverter and am very pleased with it.

Issue Resolved

Okay, the problem with iG4 crashing my system was caused by a faulty CPU. I replaced the CPU and all works fine. Apparently, iG4 is much more CPU intensive than iG3 since everything worked well with iG3. When iG4 asked for the extra cycles, it shut everything down. Thanks for the replies.

I'm having the same problem. I also have iGuidance v4 with a BU-353 and RR. whenever iG loads (if it loads correctly) it crashes the comp and reboots. I know its most likely not a software issue. I used the driver that came with my GPS, and IDK where I'd get a new one.

I reinstalled everything (XP included) thinking it might just be that, but nope, still does it. I'm really out of guesses, I hope you guys have some solutions

My symptoms were identical to yours and it turned out to be a faulty processor.

RAM can also cause instant reboots.

I'd have to say its not RAM. RAM is random and so this problem wouldnt happen every time then.

As for the CPU, I might as well flip a coin, because mostly any problem you can blame on a CPU, you can blame on a mobo too. I'd much prefer NOT to replace either since its a core duo, and i dont have the money for that or a mac mini mobo.

I'd like to think it has to do with RR and iG4.

Funny thing is, everything works fine when i have the BU-353 disabled (well, everything minus actual GPS tracking), I mean, iG4 starts in RR fine and doesnt crash. hell, iG4 works fine outside of RR.

One more question...

I am using Xport3, and at the bottom, it has a set of devices and you're supposed to checkmark the one that you're using. well I didn't have anything checkmarked, and since i checked the GPS receiver, I think that its not crashing (havent gotten a chance to test it on a long drive).

Also, with Xport3, is it bad to feed to more virtual com ports than you need? i was feeding to 3 buy only using 2.

The list at the bottom allows you to automatically stop and start drivers when you hibernate. I don't use it since most things I've tried don't start back up half the time.

I have about 6 virtual ports and use about 4 or 5 most of the time, mostly so I can use a different port for everything. You can have as many as you want.

RAM sometimes isn't random. I've seen systems that don't reboot until enough memory is used that it hits the bad spot. Keep opening lots of memory intensive programs and it will eventually hit it (if it's memory).

Thanks! I wish I new that the checkboxes were basically devcon.exe+hibernatetrigger sooner. since I checkmarked my GPS it has only randomly restarted once. Then again the longest drive ive tried so far is maybe 20 minutes. I'll have to try the mem thing, But ive done some DVD encoding on it and everything was fine, I cant think of anything that is much more memory and processor intensive than that

I know this isnt the "proper" thread for this question but instead of starting a new thread for a simple question: Why does RR need a GPS feed at all? I mean, if it doesn't affect my navigation, do I even need to give it GPS?
