I forget the company that puts it out, but there is software that includes topographical maps as opposed to standard-issue roadmaps.
For off-roading, I would think these would be far more useful than roadmaps.

I don't think that Ozi Explorer is going to do much good in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

I thought of that and checked the website before I posted. It appears that they have maps for much of the world here. Ironically, the University of Texas appears to have a miriad of maps compatible with Ozi Explorer here

I wasn't aware of that.
Pretty cool, actually....

Although the name Ozi Explorer is a bit of a misnomer, then, since it covers more than just Australia.

I have the Delorme atlas already, So what would it be betwix Ozi and Delorme why would one be better than the other? Once I am on the trail, I am not going to have much time or stability to be pushing buttons or operate a touch screen. My Delorme has voice commands does the Ozi or De Topo?

I use Ozi Explorer and know several other people who also use it. I don't believe there is any voice command capability, but I don't remember hearing anyone say they needed voice commands. Usually, we just have Ozi running and watch the position on the screen. If you get to a junction and need to think about which way to go, just stop and use the touchscreen (7" diagonal screens are marginal for touchscreen use in my opinion - my 10.4" works OK with a stylus) or a mouse. I sometimes enter a route ahead of time so I can load that and just follow the colored line if there is anything particularly complex about the route.

There is a 3rd party utility called Travel Mate that has some voice output and I think it can record voice clips, but I don't think it has any voice commands either.

One thing Ozi Explorer can do is import maps in a lot of different formats. You can get the USGS topo maps and aerial photos from various places and use those for the US. It does take a bit of study to know how to import some of them though unless you get sets of maps from someone, so it isn't just load a file and it works without any effort.

You can also take a picture such as a .jpg image and import that and use it for navigation. You have to calibrate the image by putting in known coordinates of several points on the image which also takes a bit of work. You have to be able to determine the lat/lon info of some points like the 4 corners of the map. I've used that to import maps I've found on the web. As long as its in a format Ozi can work with (and there are a lot), just about anything can be used. I've even loaded state and county highway map images and calibrated them for use.

OziExplorer is NOT something I can advise trying to operate while driving down the highway unless you have a copilot. It wasn't set up for that. None of its controls are big enough to reliably use with a touchscreen and your finger unless you've got a HUGE screen. Its ok to use to check your position once running by glancing at the position indicator, but beyond that, let someone else run the program if needed or pull off the road.

I tried to run Delorme on the Tablet today on the way to Miss. It sucked, the tabs were way to small and that was on a 14in touchscreen. The other thing that I noticed and remembered why I quit using it was the reciever kept loosing signal. The last time I used it was in the fog in Coastal La. No signal. I later bought a Garmin and it held onto the signal much better. Is there any other reciever's that hold on like a hungry wellfare mom?
