Crap gps signal on delorm eathmate

Anyone else have this issue? i have the delorm Earthmate up fron of the car on the dash and it takes forever to get a lock, I am using the software from delorms website that gives serial data out on a virtual serial port and eventually it may get a fix but more often than not it cant.

do i have a bad unit or are these notoriously bad?

throw it in the garbage. trust me I had the delorme lt 20 and did everything possible to try and get it to work better.

It's crap.

buy a pharos that comes with microsoft street or other newest sirf III chip gps recievers and you can place it UNDER the dash and it works every time!!!

The LT20 is a POJ. The regular delorme USB is a good one (now they sell a pro). I have 2 of them and work perfectly inside/under the plastic dash of the Matrix. I can get an instant lock when it sit on top of the Supra dash. Put it outside the car to see how fast it get a lock vs inside the windshield. Some car's windshield had heater inside which can block signal.

I have one already and I broke the cord.(Beyond repair)
I was going to get another one so I would 2 units and 1 cord.

That one is the same one I have.
Do you still have the old receiver and the connector to the receiver? If you do, may be you can convert it to serial. There is a thread about conversion posted by Rando.

Yea thats the one, but why would I want to convert it to serial? There is virtual serial emulator on their website if needed.

Some PC has problem with usb wakeup after hibernate. If your PC has no problem with hibernate, there is no reason to.

I had an Earthmate for a while (friend gave it to me). I recently replaced it with a BU-353 and the difference is amazing. As soon as the PC is done reawakening from hibernation, it's got a lock, more accurate fixes (my GPS trail actually follows the roads in S&T now), and I even keep my fix as I drive into my employer's parking garage. Pretty cool I think.
