Thanks guys! I will probably be able to sell this piece of kit eventually. Depends on interest.

Today I got my first NMEA log! Wonderful feeling... (below)

It will take a bit longer to try out the gyro circuitry. I also want to write the code for interpreting BMW IBus speed messages and simulate tacho pulses before I am done with this design. So with an E46 you will not have to connect tacho and direction signals. You can do if you've got another car.

Plan is to be done in June.

Edit:
I've now got valid GPS data so I know that my antenna is working!¨

Btw. Is someone using time data to set time in car?

It is sweet isn't it :-)

It is the top of the line module from trimble. I think that is its edge, lots of satellites and dead reckoning. And you can use the OEM GPS antenna.

And it will contain power functionality. That is it will power on PC and LCD with configurable timing as well as rearview camera, remote input on poweramp, etc. On a BMW with IBus you will get extra nice features.

My two prototypes was 358€ (each!), but I will be able to shave some of off that. Box alone was 70€ which is what you normally pay for the entire gps receiver :-)

When I've verified design and completed code I will put it into "General Hardware - User innovations" forum with youtube links.

Proto 1 fully assembled and I think I've found all design errors. Next week I will make my first tour with it in my car. Writing code for the 8051 at the moment!

Guys I have been trying to do this for a long time and have been watching over the details here for some time.

Just an update the Lassen DR+GPS thing is now available in Ebay for $35 from seller "oh2gma".

check this out, you can get this cheap. If you are looking out for this thing to complete and work you can try your luck to get the board now cheap.

Very good price indeed!! I think I paid £50 for my unit. (And 60$ for the gyro that you still need)

I have 8 pcb's that are left overs from the two prototypes that I've built. I will build them into GPS units without the cpu and without the case and _maybe_ without GPS and gyro. With all interface electronics (regulators, op's and some passive components). I should be able to make 8 "down to the bone" units like that for $100 + p&p. (pcb was a little over $50. Gyro op-amp was $18)

PM me if you are interested in such a kit.

It works!
It was quite fun at first to see the Kalman filters slowly adjust to tacho and gyro ratio. It overreacted and put me straight into buildings :-)

I did not loose GPS position once, even if I was off position sometimes. Aspecially at beginning in thunnels before calibration was done.

I will make U-tube tomorrow.

With antenna on roof, and with pcb in alu-box I think it will work even better!

Highslide JS

Connected to IBus and power only, speed and direction is decoded from communication and has not got to be wired separately.
The second little pcb is an IBus Resler interface. I wanted to log IBus traffic with the laptop too.

Edit:
Cannot find the #*% firewire cable do download the video... I will buy one on monday.

Finally a YouTube Demo Video

First time I've made a Video and published it on youtube. Next time I will use a script, a voice reading from script, and a camera man. And maybe a driver :-)

This is it, fully assembled.

Extra connector for inputs when used in non-BMW car witout IBus.

Mount angles can be put inwards instead of outwards
