Hello everyone, so i'm new and i'm trying to read as much as I can and get a better grasp of all this GPS technology.

I do not have a Car PC installed as yet, but in the mean time as I plan my build I wanted to get a GPS reciever to start playing with.

What i'm looking for is a reciever that I can install in my car to start using some of the programs from mp3car. I've been looking online but I can't seem to find a receiver that I can use to see it in operation.

Can anyone chime in to help clear the fog of my thought process.

Im not quite sure what you mean. YOu want to buy an actual gps receiver? If so, whats holding you back? Not being able to see it in action? Just know that it needs to output NMEA data, and unless you plan on using a bluetooth reciever, get a usb supported one. If your still not sure, look into the bu-353, i think holux makes it, but dont quote me on that. Its supposed to be really good with alot of people on here using it. I use a AyAy-Sir receiver that i got off ebay and i absolutely love it. Very fast to lock and always holds plenty of satelites.

If I understand correctly, you want to use a GPS receiver before you get the PC in your ride.
Most of the standalone units (Garmin, TomTom, etc) don't interface w/ a PC, save for updating waypoints and route information, so they aren't what you want for a PC install.
Conversely, the PC GPS (like my BU-353 & redsl1bird's AyAy) can't be used without a PC & software.

It's a quandry, to be certain...

Ok, so as i'm reading more and more of all this GPS stuff I wonder if this GPS receive will work for my beginning application:


HOLUX GPSlim239 Is a Bluetooth GPS receiver designated for vehicles. The unit is based on SiRF Stat III chipset which tracks up to 20 satellite channels.

Get this receiver and try to get it talking to the GPS web tracking???

Go with tomotm go 720...that's a pretty good system, and it has all the nuts and bolts (text to speech, stylish, accuracy, bluetooth and free open source map updates). I think this is what you might be looking for, Good luck!

Personally I use a Deluo bluetooth receiver, but it uses the same SiRF III chipset that one uses. Just keep in mind, these 'receivers' are not GPS navigation units. All they do is capture positioning information from the GPS Satelites and output nmea messages to a device across bluetooth, a usb cable or com port. If you're looking for something your computer can talk to over bluetooth, then either of these two items should work perfectly. I use mine with my windows mobile phone. With this, it allows me to run programs such as Windows Live Search, and Google Maps on my phone with realtime positioning. It also allows me to write my own custom software that reads and interprets the messages myself.
