GPS Antenna Mounting in a Jeep

Greetings, all. I'm new to all of this and am about to embark on my jeeputer project. I've noticed a few TJ owners posting in this forum and have a question for you...

What GPS antenna did you use, and where did you mount it? It appears as if the USGlobalSat BU-353 is fairly popular but my initial impression is that it is too wide to fit in the roll bar padding.... because IMHO putting a GPS antenna inside the padding of the roll bar is by far the best location as it would be on the top of the vehicle and I can neatly run the wires out of sight back to the 'puter.

Thoughts?

Anyone know of a slimer GPS antenna on the market? (doesn't have to be waterproof as it will remain inside the vehicle)

I used to own a TJ and I had my XM sat radio antenna on the roll bar, under the padding. it fit in there fine and it worked great.

I don't have my jeep anymore, but I DO use a Globalsat BU-353 antenna and I can tell you it's almost the exact same size as my XM antenna. I can't imagine any problem at all fitting it under the padding. if it really was a tight fit then you could always cut out some padding (you won't see it because it will still have the nylon cover over it)

I know first hand that the BU-353 works great so I can highly recommend it

good luck with your carPC

Thanks for the quick reply -- I think I'll give it a shot and let everyone know if it fits. It'll be perfect if it does...

You can notch the foam around the roll bar and it will fit great. I installed a tuffy overhead console and that is where all of my puter stuff is going except the screen. I will post some pix when I get done.
