this was my solution at present
not ideal, but it will do till i find something better
solution:
computer with a generic usb GPS receiver
run this program "GPSGate" it emulates and gps to pretty much any other format. ($40US)
get the program nRoute from garmin (unpack the garmin stuff like you would a zip file with winrar, then run the main.msi, that gets around the device detection) http://www8.garmin.com/support/downl...ils.jsp?id=575

Awesome, I think you've just helped me from the point I got stuck at!!!! I already had gpsgate & the NZ freemaps, I'd just got nroute but after quickly playing with it this morning I was stuck. Your solution gives me a bit of direction now. Thanks woofnstuff

Ok I get to loading Mapsource. It starts, runs & then I get "MapSource could not find any installed MapSource map products. Please install one or more MapSource products and start MapSource again." What am I doing wrong?
