Actually, the best reception would be the clearest veiw of the sky. Plastic is more or less transparent to the reciever but the steel structure is not.
Centering it in the window would be best reception, up against the a pillar on one side or the other would not.
But we're splitting hairs now...............the practical difference is pretty small.
Being closer to the center of the road might help with positioning, but given the tolerance for accuracy error in commercially available gps recievers, I highly doubt it. Mil spec units are much more accurate, but you won't get your hands on one of those without making a couple year commitment!

Mine is under the scuttle panel in front of the windscreen. It is hidden and gets some protection from the weather, but with only two layers of plastic between it and the sky, it still gets good reception.

Mine is actually under the top of my dash, near the defrost vents, the GPS will go through plastic fine. My dash is about 1/4 inch thick and works great.

the tomtom go 720 is easy to slip off the clip holder and hide it, and its a breeze putting it back on...i know some of the other ones like the mio are very hard to take down and hide and then put right back up....this is really important to consider when purchasing a gps.

Um, he's talking about a GPS RECIEVER (ie Mouse), not a whole unit.......................

Right behind my VFD in the center of the dash. There's a thin layer of plastic underneath it and I've only had reception problems when there's a lot of trees around |

Mine is behind the plastic between the front and the side window. Works perfect and very easy to cable

lol, you drilled a hole in a stuffed duck and shoved a GPS puck up it's umm, uhh, ...well lets just say you violated the duck. lol, that is funny, but you get an "A" for uniqueness 
...but seriously, why didn't you just put it under the rear deck carpet? you could put the GPS puck in pretty much the same location, without the need for the 'desecrated duck'  |

I dunno...why not? People put stuffed animals in the back of their cars all the time...I figure its a good decoration. Also, I wanted the receiver to be fairly mobile so that I can take it to another vehicle if I go on a road trip with my family or something. But I didnt want it to be too visible with the bright blue light to attract thieves.

I drilled a hole in my roof and put it in the center of van's roof. You can't see it from the street. It instantly sees many satellites and I always have good reception.
I dont know about your receiver, but mine wants to be in the center. If its not in the center, it sometimes doesnt register you got off at an exit because it thinks it is in the center of the car.
