Copilot lose GPS connection

I just got copilot 2002 setup. I have a Garmin GPS16 serial port receiver and Keyspan 4 port serial hub. When I start the copilot, it initialize the GPS receiver. After a few blocks, the Copilot stop responds and the COM port LED is off. I have to go to the planner and re-enter the driver display and start everything again. I have changed the COM port setting and still does the same thing. I thought maybe the serial plug is not pluged in al the way. I fired up Garmin MapSource and it never loses the connection with the GPS. TripMaker takes forever to lock. Thats why I sold it. Is there anything settings I can change to get it to lock all the time?? BTW, I've searched and came up nothing

The garmin is sending out too many signals for the CoPilot software to understand. There is a way to open a terminal to the GPS unit and change which signals are sent to it. I had to to it with mine and I have the instructions around here somewhere. I'm affraid to say but I think the instructions are on a computer in another state...but I'll look anyways.

jshrieve said that enable only GPGGA, GPGSA, GPRMC should work. I've tried it and it doesn't. He has Garmin GPS35PC. I have the Garmin GPS16.

Someone said that Navman GPS works with Copilot so I tracked down a site that shows what NMEA output the Navman GPS puts out.

GPGGA, GPGSA, GPRMC and GPGSV. I've tried it and it still doesn't work. Please if anyone know how to make my GPS16 work with Copilot please let me know.

According to a few newsgroup threads, Travroute changed the software in Copilot 2001 and no longer support standard NMEA GPS receivers. When the software first initalize the GPS, it looks for the Rockwell binary code or some like that. If it doesnt receive those codes, it gives the error message. Not even the generic Rockwell binary code works. Some guy even tried writing a program that converts the NMEA to rockwell output and that still doesnt work.

I guess the only way to get Copilot to work is BUY a Copilot. Anyway, are there any other GPS software out there that offers turn by turn direction, voice guidance, auto reroute, easy destination input, and overall user friendly that also works with Garmin GPS? Also for those who own a Copilot GPS receiver, does the GPS receiver work with any other software besides Copilot?

This bums me out...I knew they wouldn't sell the software separate from the GPS...so much for using copilot.

No that's not true. Copilot 2001 does use NMEA compatible receivers. I've used it with the rand mcnally receiver without a problem. I'm sure the same is true for 2002 and 2003.

That's true I'm using 2003 with a Rand Macnally serial...it works better than 2002...SHHHWWEEEEEET!

I dont think you have experienced the frustration of trying to get a "NMEA compatible receivers" to work with copilot. From what I've read and searched, Navman and Rand Mcnally work with Copilot. I'm not sure If SONY GPS receiver is compatible since it is also a rockwell type GPS receiver.

Well since my Garmin has been on backorder to 2 weeks I canceled it and ordered the NavMan. It is bigger that I wanted, but maybe it will do a better job than the Co-Pilot GPS in my truck.

Although I have a bad feeling the the Co-pilot GPS is just a NavMan in a differant case.

Just that is was big, and it was unable to get a lock anywhere other than on my dash.

I tried to mount it under the dash, but no luck.
I am going for a very clean install and a big white hockey puck on the dash just did not cut it. (At least the NavMan is Grey and Black

) Plus my Co-pilot GPS was Serial and the Navman is USB.

It should (They claim) be here early next week so I will keep you updated.
