mmmmm what to buy

I have a dilema over what to buy in terms of gps unit.

As a christmas present from some relatives I have been offered a gps unit of my choice (or a significant contribution to one if v expensive). Now do I go for a unit which will just be mounted in the car, attached to the pc etc etc or do I go for a hand held unit (eg etrex), and spend extra on software and an external aerial etc for when i am in the car.

the later option is preferable as I do a fair bit of climbing / walking etc.

has anyone gone this route on the board? and if so what probs did you encounter etc etc, and also what software do people recommend / like (UK based)

cheers

I have a now defunct Earthmate, was decent, not worth it tho IMHO.

Then I bought Copilot 2002 off of cjones and am VERY happy with that purchase for in vehicle use.

But I also bought an eTrex Legend handheld just to have to play with for 802.11b acces point mapping. I like the handheld device as it works with most GPS software out there as long as you get the data cable and set the eTrex to output the right format.

For you I would suggest the eTrex as you can use it more often, just get one of the cig power/data cables and run that so the plug is exposed, when ya need GPS you can hook it up and u'll be set, but when u wanna use it walking you still can

I dont think Copilot 2002,2003 will do him any good. He's from England.

ahh...duh

i was explaining what i've had and used so he had USEFUL information other than "I dont think Copilot 2002,2003 will do him any good. He's from England."

i wasn't pitching Copilot if you would have actually read my post you would have realized that, I was merely mentioning what i've used and suggested he go the eTrex route.

I use my eTrex every now and then hooked up it works quite well, the only thing I notice is that it takes a lot longer to acquire and it also REALLY needs line of sight to sky, the antenna is not as powerful on it.
