iGuidance 2009

Earlier this morning iNav announced the upcoming version of it's GPS navigation software iGuidance 2009.

Quote:
1. New Navteq 2008 map!!
2. Updated button colors and icons
3. New graphic engine (smoother lines & better 3D performance)
4. 3D realistic junction view (where available & provided by Navteq)
5. Traffic pattern (incl ETA & ETD calculation based on historic traffic for accuracy improvement)
6. Pedestrian mode (for street walking)
7. On-screen help for option menus
8. POI lookup by distance w/ 3 options: 5, 10, or 25 miles
9. Add'l safety features (emergency, school zone alert, etc)

The software is still in final stages of Beta 1 (Beta 2 is expected any day now.)

Sweet! This might be worth an upgrade.

One feature I'd really like to see is the integration of topographic data. Anyone who's used iGuidance in 3D mode while driving through hills or canyons can appreciate how jarring the lack can be.

Sweet! I will be upgrading.

3D view with the intersection thing is very useful when driving on the QEW or something and it is a 6 lanes each way + express lanes, and exits on the left and right and exits that split into other exits and well lets just say this will be handy!

i wonder how many people would consider investing their hard earn 100 bucks for iguidance 2009 when there are so many other choices out there. wait! this is only in beta 1 stage? iguidance 2009 is so exciting that they have to announce that it is in beta1 stage? i should start saving up for the new color buttons? wow! traffic pattern with navteq map database is nice, but should be available with all other gps software that use navteq map. the annoucement does not say anything about tts. i wonder it will retain that from iguidance4. tts is perhaps the only advantage iguidance has over the others.

personal experience: i have used the nextar PNA device with iguiance and iguidance must have one of the worst routing engine. iguidance really messed me up bad one time driving from west virginia to toronto canada, an 8.5 hour trip that took 10.5 hours. the 2 additional hours wasnt bad but the route it took us on has so many curves that made everyone more tire. driving back with a tomtom go device was much more present and 2 hours shorter. after studying iguidance a bit more and see more folks who have similar issues with iguidance routing on this forum, i ebayed the nextar and vowed never to touch iguidance again. trust me. you may be fine driving around town or to the next town with iguiance. if you drive cross states with many small highways and free ways patrallel, i recommend other gps or use google map instead.

on the business side, i thought inav was dying. their website hasnt been updated in a long time. iguidance 4.0 has not one update since it was release one year ago. seeing how many PNA like tomtom and garmin flu off the shelves from my local frys electronic, inav seem to have missed the boat. garmin, tomtom and now nokia are moving into the smart phone navigation market like the iphones and (the htc phones that are running wm6. i have one and its awesome). i hope inav can do better here.

dissappointed customer

TTS is not on most OEM systems so iG has a big advantage there. And also the improved 3D view is big news. Yes they announce the beta because it is big news. It is the best for the PC right now.

You can get iG running on a PPC no problem... And no updates on a GPS program is not something radically different.

I dont know what happend on your trip, but I bet you didnt set the route preferences correctly.

And we just drove from Colorado, USA, to Mt. Rushmore SD,USA , to Huntsville, ON, CAN then from there to Toronto, ON, CAN to Niagra, ON, CAN and then back to Colorado.

Perfect routing. Only downside was the 3D view with the exits and the lanes which is coming in this next release, and the lexus had, so we used both software and it was invaluable on the QEW since it had been a while since we drove those.

For long hauls such as more than 100km in the US switching the routing to "Major" is useful since the interstates are 70 to 75 mph but in Canada where the limit is usually 100kph max and usually closer to 80, major makes no difference and "Quickest" is king.

But we got there in the same amount of time as it took us 10 years ago with our only US guide book and a highlighter going over the interstates.
