Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Garmin Mobile PC, I've got it on the machine but its a bit jerky, ie it updates only once a second and best. I've also got igo 8 and sygic drive, no issues with them, the movement is smooth.

Anyone else had this issue. I'm running

Ahtlon X2
2Gb ram
ATI Video
BU-353 GPS receiver.

Tried GPS gate to emulate a garmin device and it wasn't having any of it. Any help gratefully accepted.

Most GPS receivers only update at 1hz, so that is the best you can expect from Mobile PC. I hooked mine up to a Garmin GPS-18x 5hz which updates at 5hz (5 times a second) and it is smoother.

damn, that'll be a new gps receiver then.

Bu-353 have 1Hz trust me because Im test it...
Garmin Mobile PC "refresh" position where gps position actualy is So if you hav 1Hz receiver then refresh it once per second... iGo calculate points beetwen gps position and then look like have better refresh. If you see when with garmin pc go into tunnel you get no signal alert, If you go with igo in tunnel they show you like you normaly drive...

Both mstaedt & dejan have given you correct info, its the receiver not the software.Try this one out it is a dual receiver usb and bluetooth to keep your options open.

hi biggkatt, thanks for the link, i will try and locate one here in england. Bit of a struggle though.

Just out of interest how frequent does Garmin update its screen, if its once a second then there is not much point but if it updates at the same rate as the gps then it should be way smoother.

Mobile PC updates every time it gets a signal from the receiver.

I'm using the Garmin GPS-18x 5hz receiver and a serial-USB adapter. The receiver was $200 and you have to wire it to a serial connector and 5V source yourself.

All that and, it's just smoother, not completely fluid. How bad do you want it?

i want it quite badly. at the moment its driving me up the wall as when, it is extremely jerky. I have ordered a Itrek so i will see how that goes.

I tried out the Garmin Mobile PC software this weekend and experienced the same exact thing plus, the "ding" right before the turn was way too premature. I am using the BU353 receiver and love it. It has always worked great for me with iGuidance and MS S&T 2008 (and 2007). I'm not going to invest even more money for another receiver in "hope" that is corrects these flaws...I'm just going to ditch the Garmin software and buy the newest iGuidance this week to use in my carpc frontend and use S&T 2008 for a backup when needed...

This is because your GPS have update only 1Hz - 1x per second...

It seems that alot of you are not understanding that Garmin's system reacts dirfferently than iguidance there maps dont flow the same as garmins you will get a better response if you have a gps receiver than can be set to different rates. the problem isn't the software the problem is the gps receivers its like trying to run a windows program oa a mac you can do it if it is tweaked like if you run wine my gps receiver works better with Garmin than with other programs but its not the programs its my receiver.

That may be so but, iGuidance AND Streets and Trips display perfectly without jerkiness and both "ding" exactly on time. In fact, I remember trying Delorme and that worked great to. Blame it on the receiver all you want but the fact of the matter is that all the gps software I tried with the BU353 work perfectly EXCEPT Garmin....draw any conclusion you want from that statement but it seems obvious to me....

yeah, just to reitterate what dejan and biggkatt have said. I was running a 1Hz receiver (BU-353). upgraded to a 5Hz receiver and its heaps better. The only thing is, the Garmin baud rate on a usb port seems to be fixed at 38.4kbps, so i have to run mine over bluetooth where the baud is 115.2kbps. Otherwise it simply doesn't detect the receiver.

If you read again what we are write you will see that only better GPS device(With 5Hz) will fix this. Why? Because GMPC show/write your position from real GPS position, so I will explain this.
You gave GPS positions A, B, C, D, E, F which you receive every second(Because you have 1Hz receiver)
GMPC:
receive position A -> show you on position A
receive position B -> show you on position B
receive position C -> show you on position C
receive position D -> show you on position D
receive position E -> show you on position E
receive position F -> show you on position F

So you see real position on time, and with 1Hz receiver work "jerky"
iGo or any other software:
receive position A -> do nothing
receive position B -> show you on position A and moving you to position B
receive position C -> show you on position B and moving you to position C
receive position D -> show you on position C and moving you to position D
receive position E -> show you on position D and moving you to position E
receive position F -> show you on position E and moving you to position F

And you see your position like normaly moving...
