New Zealand GPS Options

Hey guys,

Seems that this thread needs a little 2008 revival. Previously, Garmin Mobile PC with the NZ Maps bought seperately was the only decent solution for us NZ'ers, however after talking with Garmin International, it seems that they are now no longer available for purchase and it is only supported for North America Now thats not very useful at all.

Has anyone got any other NZ GPS software solutions that will also embed into RR, for us little ol NZ'ers?

OziExplorer is a popular package for Australia. I don't know whether it has maps for New Zealand or not, but it might be an option worth investigating, at least.

i was using my generic USB receiver with GMPC and the NZ open source maps

the hard part is getting a copy of the software, without paying an arm and a leg for it.
im still using nroute, which isnt as pretty but works

Could you please elaborate on this a little bit more? What has been discontinued, GMPC, or NZ maps? As far as I know there has never been a version of GMPC other than the one which included North American map data, but that has not prevented users from buying it and adding maps of other parts of the world to it. I'm not sure what the Garmin employee meant by "no longer available".

Im referring to the NZ Maps that used to be purchased as an extra. F1Racr who is another NZ'er around here bought these maps last year i think, but now when you navigate the Garmin website, they're just not anywhere to be found, and the garmin rep who emailed me said that GMPC now only supports North America. The links that F1Racr put up to the NZ Maps on the garmin store now just take you to a "object not found" page.

This is what was emailed to me when i asked Garmin about getting NZ Maps for GMPC:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I would be happy to help you with this. At this time the only coverage
for Mobile PC is North America. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Please let me know if I can further assist you. Thank you.

This is where i learned of NZ Maps for GMPC which was a post from F1Racr:

I'm using Garmin Mobile PC with these NZ Maps.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=139&pID=13484

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8467&pvID=2649

Also bought one of their GPS receivers also. $ 70 for receiver and only $ 100 for Receiver plus Mobile PC. $ 40 is well worth it I reckon. No idea why NZ maps are so pricey in relative terms, but overall it's just as cheap as buying a normal SATNAV system so.........

About 2 months ago i went to the store links above and sure enough, on the garmin site, there were maps available for NZ and most other countries. Going back to the link 2 weeks ago, it was all gone.
