I am completely new to this scene, and this is my first gps receiver+software purchase, so please bear with me. I have chosen Mobile PC for software, but will not be purchasing the hardware/software bundle due to this issue. Nor am I considering the typical 1hz receiver solutions due to this issue.

Here are some 5hz solutions:
i.Trek M7
Garmin 18x
GlobalTop GMR75
GlobalTop G33

I prefer USB connectivity over bluetooth because it adds complexity and additional expenses (dongle). However, it seems like USB connectivity has its problems and seems less common, so if it comes down to it I will buy a bt dongle. Advice?

I've got a 10Hz BT/USB GPS receiver working with GMPC. I had problems getting it to work on USB but as soon as I started forwarding the USB COM port through X-Port, it was fine (I needed to do that anyway to share the data with RR).

Haven't had it on the road yet to see how smooth it is but at least it is accepting the 10Hz NMEA stream.

I tested GMPC with i.trek M7 a few months ago. It worked very nicely at 5Hz. But I just don't remember now if I used is via BT or USB.

So If I have the Garmin Bundle, I can't use any of the features like Gagues and Mileage plugins etc/ since I won't be able to split the signal and send the GPS info to RR?

The Garmin 18x looks interesting. I want to test one.
1. It stores ephemeral data for quick acquisition of satellites.
2. Magnetic mount.

USB vs. Bluetooth:
In my personal opinion I love USB over Blue Tooth.
*Never needs charging
*Starts up and shuts down with the computer
*No need to Pair the device

I use a BU-353 in my car. It sits INSIDE my dash above the air ducting but below the plastic dash board.

We will be out at CES in a few weeks and will check this out while I am there. We should have some 5hz GPS devices on our store.

...and so does your BU-353, and most other GPS receivers, unless the internal rechargeable battery gets bad/too old.



I like USB over Blue Tooth, too.
* Teeth should be white (not blue)
* A piece of wire is usually more reliable than any other method of connection

The 18x looks like a good receiver, but its price, lack of usb connectivity, and additional wiring turns me off. It looks like the GlobalTop GMR75 is currently the best option, but I don't know much about it, there doesn't seem to be much experience with it, and some sites say the configureable refresh rate is maxed at 3hz instead of 5. Anyone have first-hand experience with this?
