Lambo,

I have a question about this program in general.

1) Does it allow for resetting the clients clock to the GPS time?
2) Can I use to program to log NMEA data from a 5Hz GPS to a file on the machine actually attached to GPS?

I am looking to log data directly on the car computer. I do not want a home server I want to log directly to the car machine and will periodically get data off it. I do not have a cell phone/data connection so cannot log to another server and honestly that is not the goal of what I am trying to do in any case.

I appreciate your time in answering my questions. (Bugbyte suggested I check this out when he heard what I wanted to do).
edit: BTW that crowd sourced mapping thing is awesome. If this works for me I will make sure and attempt to upload the data as well if I can.

a1) It has the abiltiy but I switched it off. Its already part of RR and other people reported peoblems using it. I could switch it back on if you're interested.
2)All tracking data is stored on the carputer until it manages to upload to a server. All the data is stored in a sqlite database. You could extract the data from there if you didn't want to set up the server side stuff.
You would have to fake the ini files server details but if you interested I can give details.

Lastly its good to hear about the crowd source stuff. I haven't had any feedback yet on how its working for people so if you want to use it I'm ready to help in anyway possible.

Lambo,

Thanks for the input. I was not planning on running RR on the client machine (GPS time did not work on my carputer in my personal vehicle with RR either).

This case is more for data acquisition than for carputer coolness. Having a consistent clock is necessary so I can record OBDII data as well at the same time and analyze them together. If the clock is not set to the GPS time then the OBD data would be out of synch significantly unless of course I was smart enough to use xport and then time stamp the OBD data with the GPS time as well. I don't have any idea how to do it though.

The 5Hz rate will not mess up your software? I did not know if it was set to only update at 1Hz. I would appreciate some info on faking the ini files server details so I can keep the data around. It is possible that I can get a wireless card installed and sync the data to a server once in awhile as well. Could I do that and still keep a record on the carputer/client as well? I will test the parking location later (it is in a concrete garage) and if wireless works maybe I can just set up a server myself the way the program was intended to be used. I will still need to synch the clock and manually get OBDII data though.

I need to resolder the RS232 port b/c I made the exposed wires to long and think they have the potential to short, but then I can install your program and see how it works.

On an unrelated note: What do you know about the crowdsourced data? When I looked at the website it looks like the map is already extremely complete. If they actually showed the data they have it might help people know where more data is needed.

If your willing to test I could add this for you.

It should make no odds. The client updates tracking data at a user definied interval that depends on whether its in the alert mode (every 2 secs), connected to the server or not connected.
The mapping data is collected every 100 metres.

According to stuff thats been posted about openstreet they dont give out the data. They keep it to themselves although the maps they generate from it are free. Our project is to add to this data but keep the original data ourselves so we still have access to it.

C

welcome back. Some tasty new features for you to try. If you have a go at mapping please tell me so I can see if it works. So far either everyones disabled it or it doesn't work and I dont know which it is.

Weird I posted a response and it disappeared. Twilight zone here. I will try again.

Lambo I wanted to double check something quickly with you before you were to waste any time on this.

Does that mean it only logs data every 2 seconds? Or that the data is sent every two seconds to the server? I did test my unit and it worked at 5Hz and recorded some nice and smooth GPS tracks with some other software, but I had to manually start it, choose a file name, and stop it. Obviously I would rather use your software.

Does it matter what NMEA sentences we use? I have my unit only sending $GPGGA and $GPRMC sentences to save bandwidth and make data sorting easier in the future.

Can you give me some hints about how to install it only on a client machine?

In the first post it says something about different directories. does this mean I could just install the client and server both on the carputer then have the data saved in an SQLlite database there?

Thanks for you help

*crosses fingers this post doesn't get deleted too*

The client sees every message the gps unit sends but it only logs data to the database for the time periods you select.
If in alert mode its every two seconds but for the other two its upto you. In your case with no server you'll just set the tracking period and retry period to the (same) seconds you want.

I look at GPRMC,GPGGA,GPGSA.
You need the GPGSA to verify how accurate the gps location is HDOP in particular.Without this no tracks will be created as the app will allways assume that the track is to low in accuracy.

To install without the server do the following.
Install the client on your carputer. Tick the mapping & tracking boxes (the proxy server is not implemented yet).
When you get the ini file settings screen make the internal and external ipaddress 127.0.0.1.
Make the com port 1234 (just a 4 digit number, its not used)
make the macaddress something that looks like a macaddress (again its not used)
make the SSID any string (i.e. lambo).

Set the client user to a name for your car.
set the tracking and retry period to the time you want each track to be taken .Make them the same value.
Set the gps settings to your gps devices settings (the latest version I have here automatically detects this)

On the next screen set the min number of points to be deleted when collecting mapping data. This is to protect your start and end location for privacy reasons.
Leave the manual / auto setting on 1. This way the mapping data will be sent when ever you have a network link. If you'll never have a link then set it to 0 but then you'll have to manually export the xml (just click on the client button ) and then upload it to the mp3car.com ftp site.

probably missed something but any problems just post or pm.

edit: I did forget.
You ONLY need to install the client not the server.

22 downloads and no feedback. I can't improve things if nobody tells me whats wrong (if anything).

Also nobodys uploaded any mapping data. Is this because you've all switched it off or because you can't get it to work? I'm willing to help any one who asks for help.

I haven't had a chance to do it yet lambo I will give you some feedback when I do.

I was debating waiting on a new copy of winXP. This is for a project, but I used a personal copy to save time. I did not activate it yet and wanted to get the organizational copy installed.

edit:
BTW no one happens to know what how well USB wifi adapters work do they? I don't know if I can get a card into the case it is super tight. I would probably be able to get a USB cable and place the adapter somewhere with better reception to.

got the tracker installed but there are a few problems that i cannot crack..

the server part is ok but the labels are off when the window is maxxed:

the client is getting good gps fix(garmin set to use com6, RR com7 and the tracker com8):

but the client is not working, i get an error like this:

The box says this:

You haven't set your picpath. I think thats whats causing your client error. I'll probably have to check for that.

I dont know why the screen is messed up. Its fine for me. what res are you at?

also I'd remove your debug log post or delete parts of it because your giving away alot of info.

debud edited...

the server pc is running at 1024*768

thought picture path was only needed on the client side and only if you wanted the picture stuff... i want that but have no cam attached yet so left it out

EDIT: tried to edit the ini for the server side.... no ini ??

EDIT: setting the path did the trick on the client side

the client is now happy and it got a solid fix, checked the ini but the server is not getting any data... what could be wrong? the firewall is opened and i'm testing on local lan for the moment

EDIT: it says 600000 next to the server ip... and it displays the external server ip... how do i know which ip it uses?
