GPS - Moves when stopped

Hello all -

I have done several searches in multiple forums and google and have not found much information about my specific issue. Its not a huge issue but it bothers the crap out of me lol..

I am using bu-353 -> gpsgate -> centrafuse

When I am driving the navigation generates the correct orientation (arrow points in the correct position) however, as soon as I stop at a red light, the positioning goes crazy. It goes from north to south to NW to SE (it just goes crazy). Once I start driving again it corrects itself.

Is there anyway to stop the GPS from doing this when stopped?

mine does it when it doesn't have a good lock, how many satellites do you have when it does it?

It could be your GPS or your software. The reason this happens is because GPS systems are designed to be used while moving. The only true way for them to gauge your DIRECTION is by taking two subsequent readings and determining the difference between them. If your GPS is getting readings while stopped that you have moved 0.1m in a direction, it will confuse your software into believing that you are actively driving in that direction.

You need software to recognize this or a more accurate GPS reading.

As mentioned above, how is your reception when this happens?

Does this happen only while traveling among tall buildings, or even when you are in an open area?

You could, at least temporarily, place your BU-353 on the roof of the vehicle to test if there is going to be any improvement when reception is better.

Part of the problems with these gps receivers, is that because they can get a lock on a very weak signal, people decide that it'd be good enough keeping them in the car. However, that ends up often barely being able to keep a lock on 4 sats. Getting it on the roof will proably get you 7-8 sats at least, which will greatly increase your accuracy, and minimize the effects of other blockages.

I started to hear about people placing their GPS units in really odd places in 2005, when the first high-sensitivity (SiRFstarIII) units started to appear. I've heard of people keeping their Bluetooth GPS receiver in the glove compartment. While that may work, it unfortunately is an inferior location for it. It will work, but the performance will not be satisfactory.
