BU-353 cuts out unexpectedly
Using BU-353 GPS USB reciever plugged directly into Intel D945GLF2 MB, Roadrunner, Xport, iGuidance.
Receiver works great, always has except that hours into a drive it will randomly cut out.
The "GPS" icon in my RR skin will disappear and iGuidance will lose its location. Occasionally the GPS icon in RR comes back, but shortly back off. The GPS info screen in iGuidance shows no coordinates and all the satellites are greyed out instead of being green as they usually are. I typically get 8-9 satellites, no problem.
The puck is located underneath my dash which is plastic. It has a clear view of the sky through my windshield. I do not have any tint on my windshield. This is in a WRX so I can remove the clock in the dash easily to expose the GPS, this eliminates the possiblity of the plastic dash causing interference, unfortunately this does not help. It shouldn't anyway since I have proven the GPS has no problem getting a fix on multiple satellites with it in place.
Restarting the system brings it back to normal.
Note this occurs with a clear view of the sky on an interstate. It's not as if I'm covered by trees or in a canyon. I have experience with GPS units and they typically don't lose signal in these conditions.
Opening xport shows it's still communicating data, although I can't confirm there is anything useful in it.
I suspect a faulty GPS unit (it's only 3 weeks old) or some OS related issue, or possibly xport not forwarding properly.
I can't consistently reproduce the problem.
I am not connected through a GPS hub, it's directly connected to the USB terminal on the back of the motherboard.
This is not a resume from hibernate/standby/startup problem, never had those problems, I am literally losing the GPS randomly hours into using it.
I've searched through the threads, but all I could find were issues with initial setup, I've already cleared those hurdles.
Any ideas?
Ready to just return the unit.
Any suggestions for a more reliable GPS?
Thanks.
