Earthmate vs. CoPilot 2003

Can anyone explain to me the key differences in Earthmate ($120) and CoPilot 2003 ($360)?

I'm just completing my carputer, money is tight, and this will be my first GPS hardware/software. I'll be using the 7" in-dash LCD from digitalww. I don't do a ton of driving, but enough, and I want the convenience and coolness of GPS to be part of my system. Do you think the Earthmate system (hardware/software) would be good enough for me?

What makes the CoPilot system so much better that it justifies the price jump? Is the receiver a lot better? How does the software of each compare?

I am clueless when it comes to GPS and would really appreciate it if anyone could answer any one of these questions.

The Earthmate GPS is pretty much accurate and does most of the job but it's very hard to control while you're driving. CoPilot on the other hand is very easy to control thanks to its driver-friendly user interface and its door-to-door routing feature out-performs Earthmate's routing feature by 234729374x

Have anyone tried the GPS solution from deluo? How is it compared to Earthmate & CoPilot?

Isn't deluo and Earthmate just GPS receiver? Are you comparing GPS receiver or GPS navigation software? If you're comparing GPS software for the actual step by step navigation, nothing comes close to Copilot. Once around the block with Copilot and you'll never go back to anything else again.

like cproaudio said, if you are comparing nav software NOTHING will beat Copilot, I had DeLorme Earthmate with it's Streets or whatever software it's called in my first vehicle and it sucks big time.

yeah... what I meant was the software. deluo has this one called Routis. Has anyone had any experience with it? The price is in between Co-pilot and Earthmate's street whatever. cproaduio, thanks for the info. Maybe I should just get Copilot. How are those software compare to.. let's say a factory nav or an aftermarket Alpine/Kenwood/Pioneer DVD nav?

Isnt Media Engine 2.0 GPS functions based on Mappoint GPS software? Dont we have to have mappoint in order for ME GPS function to work? So now I gotta somehow get a copy of mappoint that costs $250 and wait til 3rd Q 2003? That's about 1-3 months from now. From the preview screen shots of the ME GPS, it looks awsome. Will it work with wide screen format 848X480?

if it's based off of m$ mappoint I would never trust my life in a car with it running, mappoint was NEVER intended for navigation, it's a business class mapping software for making maps, not navigation

My favorite software in the whole world was Sony (Etak) Skymap 2000. It was one ofthe first with voice nav. I still love it ,but its outdated. <sniff> it came together with reciever for 275.

I tried everything else except Copilot. It SOUNDS great, and I have no problem paying for software im going to use, but there is no way in hell I am going to shell out the cash, (not to mention I will not use anything other than a garmin reciever) before testing it myself... And sadly none of my friends have a clue what to do with a car-pc , so they dont have any software....

So I just picked up Delorme's Street Atlas USA 2003 - Read through the manual last night , going to give it a try tonight

Let us know, I am going through the same decision process. I am leaning toward the Earthmate due to cost (3x). The CoPilot would have to be leaps and bounds ahead of everything else to justify the cost.

IMHO it is way better than the earthmate software stuff, god I hated the earthmate while I had it, broke down and bought CoPilot

Well, (sadly) - I didnt have much time to play, but my old Etak reciever didnt work under Street Atlas. I will play with it some more, but my Garmin unit will be here any day... not going to invest too much more time into the old stuff.

i am using the DeLorme Street Atlas 2003 and I find it works quite nicely. Ive never tried co-pilot, it looks awesome thought. The cost of it is just way to much for me at this time.
