street atlas and mappoint show different locations - wtf!

argh
Im using USB DeLorme Earthmate

Street Atlas looks like this:

MapPoint looks like this:

MapPoint shows the correct location while Street Atlas does not
Very odd since DeLorme makes both the software and the hardware. Youd think theyd work together properly

Whats going on here???

Thanks

If I'm looking at these pics correctly, and I think I am, they both show you on "Bridgeport"...?

The maps do differ a little and it does appear you are further down the road on the Street Atlas map but you are in the same place give or take a few yards.

The average GPS, and please correct me if I'm wrong, can be off by a number of yards at any given time...

Although now that I am looking at the Longitude / Latitude, the Latitude is way off. Not as bad as the Longitude, and the elevation!!! It's like you're 4 stories higher...Hmmm....perplexing indeed.

I've never used either SW, is there a way to calibrate it so it could be more accurate?

The elevation bounces around on both programs
MapPoint is more accurate but the number changes every few seconds
Street Atlas shows me further down the street than I really am
Im assuming this would make it nearly impossible to use the system for driving navigation. It would show you that youre on a street youre really not on

I know Street Atlas sells a product to make a GPS more accurate, down to a 4Ft. radius I think. It's software. I don't quite remember the name of it. Try searching there site.

My quick calculation says the gps positions are the same (at least the latitude that I checked). One is in decimal degrees, the other in degrees, minutes. Look how much difference in position there is between the E-W road North of the car in both maps. On one, its just about even with 30th St & on the other its quite a bit North. The two maps seem to disagree on just where that street is or they're showing different streets. Looks to me like that is the problem and the actual position of the car is the same on both.

so in other words mappoints maps are more accurate

im testing from my house right now
once i get it setup in my car ill drive around and see if its still off

33 53' = 33.833
118 23' = 118.38

so ya, both of the readings are almost the same (about a tenth off)
good spot on that 30th street thing too, thats interesting. would explain for just map differences

100% correct. SA either has some old or just plain poor maps compared to MS, altho I've never been shown as driving in the lake or anything else like that on SA, they're usually not that far off, but just far enough to be annoying. And neither SA or MS put my house at the right point on my block .

SA is sometimes off by quite a bit. For example, If you follow I-5 north of Los Angeles to Pyramid Lake, SA shows I-5 runs through the whole lake. But it actually goes around the lake. Even in GPS mode, the green dot trail goes around the lake.

Copilot is mostly accurate but this weekend I experienced two instances where it did not place me on the major freeway that I was on. It would eventually get the right position so I think the maps are probably off but it could be something else.
