using the garmin MG maps with custom software, the maps are really well detailed and take up barely any space being vector based (around 1.3meg for melbourne), have pretty much every street covered and lots of POI's for restuaraunts, petrol stations etc.

yep umm try this for non-direct3d one, it isn't zoomed in as far as you'd prolly like tho it can was just an old pic during autorouter generation code but you get the idea. can search for streets by voice recognition at moment, still have to code text input.
edit: i guess this is more what you were after

I grabbed a GPS off ebay for $105 (new) on USB. It works very well with GPSS. I live in Perth, and there is no comercial software available for here yet. Magellan claim to be bringing a CD out soon (next three weeks or so) that is way better than the Garmin StreetPilot unit. So I'll have to wait until then. GPSS is quite cool though, as it comes with primitve maps of WA and does moving maps etc. It doesn't know strret names and turns though.
Guess I'll have to wait until Magellan get there arse into gear and bring out there version.

Hi guys - I can vouch for the first eBay link - I grabbed the exact same unit in Canada off of eBay - works great with Destinator, MS-Streets & Trips and Mappoint. Haven't tried any other software ...
EDIT: I mean to say the device works well - I don't know anything about the person selling it!
