Copilot 2003 GPS Requirements

Ok, i am going to be putting a gps Carputer in my Car. And I have been researching software to do this. And from the searches I have found most everyone thinks Copilot is the best.

I looked up its system requirements and it says it needs a USB or serial GPS reciver. Now I also have read on the forum that there GPS is the only that works with it. Is this from experience because they do not come out and say that on their site. I would like to use a Garmin reciver a GPS-16 or GPS-35. Why wouldn't they work?

afaik only the copilot receivers and the rand mcnally serial receiver work with it

Yes, the new and really small USB Earthmate Reciever.

I believe that it is with the serial version of the delorme receiver, not the USB right?

My friend has it working the the USB Reciever

I stand corrected. I went and got an Earthmate USB GPS at Best Buy and it works for a few minutes and then says it only works with CoPilot GPS.

Yup... they use some string to make sure if its their brand of GPS. It is possible to hack into it from what I hear.

BTW, for the CoPilot 2003 users...
Does it take over the other screen if you use dual monitor setting?! I am thinking about using it for car pc and it would be no go if it takes over dual display idea I have (one for DVD for kids and the other one for Navigation for driver).

I wish that it did work... but at the same time I was going to be ****ed if it did!! Just got a Rand McNally Serial, and if I could have gotten that little USB be one...

I'm writing software for the same idea. GPS on one screen and multimedia on another. However, I don't like Copilot that much anymore because their routing never took that fastest routs. I'm using Destinator now, and I have their SDK. So I'm writing a program that will integrate the Destinator software into my multimedia program alowing me to place the GPS on which ever screen I want with out worry about alining or "Default Possitioning." If you get copilot to open up on your secondary screen, there's no promiss that you wont have to work to do it again.

Also, the benefit of having it integrated into the multimedia system is that you can have alerts and external hardware work along side. For instance, in my system the nav screen is hidden. And if you are on a road trip, the nav-screen will pop-up if you are coming to a point you need instructions (turns, jct., etc.) and then once the point is passed will hide again. Or if you press a button on the multimedia screen it will pop-up. The idea is that you don't need a GPS system in your face for a 40-100 mile trip down one road (route 66).

One more benefit: I'm putting in a HUD into my dash, and I plan to have it display my MPH/RPMS/Fuel as well as the street I'm on, the street I'm coming up to, compas, and when the next turn is coming.

Just some helpful ideas.

Yes. It has North America Maps and the SDK is free. Just register (also free) and they email you a secure link to the SDK. It's very easy source code to understand. Most of it is already put together. It's ready for you to just call and request variables. Simple.
