new G3 phone as gps

hi,

im in need of a new mobile phone, and was wanting gps in me car as well, then i stumbled acoss 3 a g3 phone network mob, i think their in the UK as well, (im in AUS) anyway the phone in question is the new motorolla a920 http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=326 which has GPS.

its just been relased so im taking a long shot here but has anyone tried to get the gps to work with any pc software?

or any suggestions

I saw that GPS for phone on 3G available on NOKIAs and some other mobile a few weeks ago. I cant remember where but Ive lost interest when I saw very small print something like "1 year subscribtion is required to some network to have an unlimited navigation request.

GPS navigation should be free

ahh ok, i rang the customer care dudes, who are basically monekys (no offence frodo haha) but they cant tell me wether or not their will be a cost involved as the gps has not been setup yet in australia.

and thats kinda one of their big selling points (the gps) ...

My friend has the new samsung g100000 something.... its the latest Sprint phone w/ pocket pc os.

I know it has a gps onboard, I will try and load some software on it , and see what I can get going

the gps on cell phones is only accessible by the e911 system, it can't be used as a gps antenna for other software, that would be cool tho

in the states at least when a person calls 911 from their cell phone the 911 operator is allowed access to their gps information of the phone, basically a locator, so in case you can't speak when you call 911 they know your exact location and can dispatch units to assist you.

My sanyo 8100 has a gps/location feature that can be turned on/off through the menu.

Only noticeable difference is an icon that pops up on the screen. I have no idea how to view the gps data on the phone or via a link but it is there. Like freestyler said, it is used by 911, but I believe that they may also use it for future sprint services.

Try seeing if anyone at sprintusers.com knows how to get access to the GPS data.

AFAIK no, i spend a lot of time at sprintusers.com too, it isn't a standard gps interface. i have the 8100 too and have been messing around the hack menus searching for it with no success

I just did a quick search at sprintusers.com as well.

Location feature and applications expected to roll out in early 2004. Hopefully an API will be released. Currently in testing somewhere in Oklahoma.

One planned application is an interface with mapquest.com. You can already have mapquest send the directions straight to your phone, but with the location feature, it could also help you navigate.

Sounds neat, but it'll probaly come at cost and has some time before it comes online.

The GPS that you are reading is not a true GPS. It's aGPS. What it actually does is triangulate the cell phone using 3 cell towers to pin point your location. Like freestyler said, it can only be located on the reciver end and reciver is the 911 dispatcher. So it in theroy is not a real GPS that you can use.

Thanks for the heads up on the new mot phone. I used to work for MOT and I have buddies that design the phones that live around my house. Freebie time.

e911 service should have been up and running since Aug99 but it's not fully up to speed yet. But the aGPS technology was used to locate people trapped at the world trade center by Motorola.

Sprint phones may use gpsOne. It's a hybrid approach that uses both GPS Satellites and towers. It offers greater accuracy and for the phone itself to know its location not only the towers/recievers.

My understanding of AGPS was that it was a true GPS but used the 3G system for the mapping information??? Is there a x-ssed wire???
Also I am pretty sure it is a true GPS as
1. It has a GPS antenna socket in addition to the RF one
2. It has "GPS on the back - surely it would be an infringement of trade descriptions if it didnt have GPS?
