we sell these devices to used car dealerships and new car dealerships. They are units the size of pagers that can be hidden under the dash to the buyers that finance cars. As a way to locate the car if the buyer misses multiple payments that way we can easily locate the car within 50ft of the signal. It works like a pager and is located by GPS. Its pretty much like an onstar system in GM cars. Just without the two way communication that onstar provides. These units sell for about 300-400 a piece. All you have to do is call our toll free 800 # and punch in ur user ID and pass code and it will tell you exactly where the car is real time.
Sounds like this would work out well for you. I can find out actually pricing for retail customers if you are interested.
It gives you detailed info of where the car exactly is, how fast it is moving if it is moving at all.

There is an alarm system that works with gps that viper and clifford just recently introduced. It just came out so I don't know much about it. But I know it has some cool features like you can turn your car on from anywhere in the world. They say its better then lojack for almost the same price. You can call and find out where your car is and also I think you can use the net to find out where ur car is. Something like what you want? Might wanna check it out.

One thing you can do is setup a GPS system on a trisquit board and connect an air car. Just write a program to send the Long/Lat via TCP to your computer.

it sounds to me like the slightly modified rist watch is your best solution. Shouldn't take much work to power it off the car.

Hi Guys,
This doesn't help exactly but I'm sure in the States you have a similar system to us in the UK with tracking your mobile phone (as some have pointed out ). It's completely passive for the user - all that's required is they have the mobile on and with them.
http://www.locatemobiles.com/
accuracy is not as great as GPS (upto 100 meters) but that's enough to locate where someone is.
Parents are using this in the UK to track where their Kids are great (unless you're a kid )

She does not suffer from dimensia, nor has she ever caused a traffic accident, but when she is expected somewhere at 3 p.m. and doesn't arrive until 9 p.m., we naturally assume the worst.
What we'd like is a simple device that we can access remotely when she is missing, that will tell us her location in real time, and that SHE does not have to operate. (She has difficulty operating a cell phone.)
We'd like to spend under $400.
Any recommendations?

Hi MerryMac,
I stumbled on your message and would like to introduce a product developed by my company and about to lauch this April. It is called the MOB101 DIY Mobile Asset Tracking System.
It uses SMS and GPS tools and cost around $600 for retail (Negotaible). To demostration its capability, please send the following SMS message PW123456;LOC (ie Password 123456, Semi-colon, Location) to 612-415558539 and it will replay with the lat/long co-ordinates and speed of vehicle. Have fun.
