Comment on Deluo GPS recevier and Talking software

So far, I have only seen Copolite was the only program that had voice guiding system.

But last night, I also found another program called : RandMcNally StreetFinder® Talking software that also had a voice guiding system

This uint only cost 119 dollars with deluo GPS recever, which is relatively cheap compare to 300 dollars Copolit GPS.

I'm wondering if any one has tried this program yet, can any one give me some advice?? such as, how long will it take for deluo GPS to lock your location, and how is the guiding program in RandMcnally compare to Copolit, thank you

Delorme Street Atlas 2004 Has built in Speech Recognition and Text To Speach imbedded. It works AWESOMME and came with my Delorme Earthmate USB GPS unit.

I cant say enough nice things about it.

I haven't used the receiver with RandMcNally yet, but I got the Routis 2004 with my deluo receiver and I'm very impressed for the price. The voice guidance is awesome and it gets a lock in less than a minute.

My friend works at the Lexus technical center, and Routis (which I just tested out today, what a wonderful piece of software! get it from Deluo) is between the GEN 3 NavTech based mapping systems they use, and the new GEN 4 (some other company). GEN 4 is only used in one car for now I think, and it does 3d Maps (which the Routis also does), but can also show you representations of buildings.

We set destinations, went different directions, and Routis didn't skip a beat. Would tell you to do U-turns, but if you knew another way, soon it would figure out a new route for you. Very fast, very quick, and just enough for car use. Street Atlas has a clunky interface. Routis can work well with just 640x480, and was MADE for touchscreen use, so it's simple, and well laid out.

I tried to do this once before, but just ended up writing a letter to Delorme to tell them what features would be nice. 4 product iterations later, nothing has really changed, and I still wasted like $150. Routis seems to be the same as mynavigator and iguidance for the most part. Their voice guidance is based off of human speech (similar to supermarket price checkers), not synthesized, so it sounds natural (not human, but easy to process while driving). I think I might almost never need to look at the screen at all while driving (which would be great).

Routis doesn't support you talking to it (I think). But again, I love the factory lexus nav, and this is very very close, if not better. ***** 5 out of 5 stars.

Oh, and the daytime/nighttime auto contrast flip thing it does... didn't like it at first (and you can disable it), but once it got dark out, I could see why it switched... literally. Awesome.

PS: My friend who did all the nav testing while I simply drove around, gave the voice a name... "*****in' Betty", because she gets ****ed if you don't follow her directions (he's into airplane stuff). My lexus friend said the employee's call their nav voice Peg (or Peggy).

I would like to add my 2 cents about Routis ... ITS AWSOME! I have used Copilot, TomTom, and Routis in my PDA. I liked Copilot but it was way too expensice, upwards of $250! I got TomTom thinking it was just as good at $180 … wrong … it sucks because it didn’t find most of the addresses I searched. Often TomTom messed up locations of restaurants. Then I got Routis from Deluo, at a cost of $99 you can't beat it. If found the address and restaurants that TomTom couldn’t, not to mention that Routis makes the phone numbers available for the PDA version. Now I know that it is the NavTech database that beats the rest. If the navigation software doesn’t use NavTech than don’t bother.

The moral of the story is that it also came with the PC version free!!! So I installed it in my Carputer and it works great. My only complaint is that the text is too small for a TV based display. I am now looking in writing a front end for it and adding it to my MediaJukebox software. The price is right and I would recommend it.

I contacted the folks at deluo for info about Routis and they let me know that the Routis 2003 and 2004 both support the NMEA 1.80 standard. So I bought Routis 2003 on eBay and plan on upgrading it to 2004. Now I need a good USB receiver.

Ok, Deluo receiver for 59.00. I found out that routis won't upgrade you from 2003 to 2004 without your order number in your records. The fellow I bought the 2003 will include the update to 2004 ver. when he ships the software. total cost for s/w and usb receiver....118.00. I hope the routis 2004 is great!

Chut, Sorry for not checking up on the thread but I have the 2004 bundle with the serial gps and USB to serial adapter. I like the fact that it comes with the PDA and PC version and on my PDA it has the phone numbers stored.

And I have a Deluo that works great with Mappoint, haven't really tried it for any length of time with any other GPS soft, but it works well enough with Mappoint.

I must mention a little program called, IGUIDANCE. IT rocks. It is The same as routis, just a different name same company makes it. Uses the same navetech map data and everything. Can be bought for about $100.00. It is worth every dime. I use it all the time and accuracy is excellent.

I allways reccommend doing a lot of research and reading a lot of different reviews before purchasing software. Lot's of people have a lot of problems with Delorme Products. Check out epinions.com or just read the forums here and you will find tons of info.

I payed the extra 20 bucks for the streetfinder deluxe,,, but havent got it installed yet to do a good test..... But i am not too crzy from just looking at it on my laptop.
But i am a gps newbie so hopefully soon i will be able to see
