Hi Ricky327,

Yep those were some of the problems with the earlier versions. One of the most irratating features was when you were heading the wrong way. It popped up a message to tell you but you had to click ok to continue. Until you did the program was stopped! It does work pretty well now fortunately.
I totally agree with your sentiments on companies using paying customers as beta-testers. Wonder if Bill Gates is listening?

I got CoPilot (2001 and then updated to 2002 with friends software). I choose it because it calculates directions, voice and voice input. I am sure, that today there are more brands on the market.

Cons: It calculated shortest trip by default. As a result I was stuck for 6 hours on local roads instead I94. You need to switch to "fastest" route. Also it calculates "fastest based on assamption, that you drive 55mph on interstate, 55mph on local one lane "highway" and 35mph on streets. I prefer to setup 85 on highway, 45 on local highway and 20 on streets.

Does anybody know if you can use Routis 2003 with a "universal" NMEA compliant receiver or do you have to use a particular reciver?

I prefer Iguidance, it is the best I have tried a lot of different ones. SA 2003 and 2004 in my opinion SUCK. THey are way in accurate and the menu's could never be used on a small touch screen (7"). As for MS map point and street and trips, it only updates your position every 15 seconds, on the expressway, you easily pass your turn before it warns you. Anyway here are some screen shots for iguidance that I found...

Using AGPS plugin with mappoint you can configure to update every 1 second if you want. I've also seen some post about being able to do this without AGPS through a hack or change in config file-don't remember which.

Well I gave co-pilot 2003 a shot a few weeks. To my dissappointment, it sucks. Doesnt work well with low res screens. Mine is a Datalux Ebay Special and doesnt do better than 640x480. So map displays, menus and everything were scrunched together and it just sucked. Kept asking me for a destination when all I wanted to do was track my position. Anyway $250.00 for a software package that needs a proprietary gps sensor, and a gps sensor that only works with co-pilot software is just outrageous. I emailed ALK(travroute) telling them about this great experience. Waiting for a response I can't wait to here there response.
Anyone wanna buy it, it would probably work good on a higher res screen but I dont have one, there fore I have no need for this anymore.

I use the Black USB Ebay special(model bu-303). YOu can pick it up for about $75.00 now. If you read reviews on it, it is very good. Tracks 12 sats max., Mine gets a lock in about 30 secs., this is really good compared to the co-pilot reciever or the earthmate. ANyway before I get off on some tangent, I am going to stop typing here.

I use copilot 2003 and sa 2003 and run both programs off the same gps receiver, infact I have used the copilot receiver and a hulox model and it works just fine. If you want to just track your position hit cancle when it asks for a destination and choose pasenger mode.

The beauty of adding AGPS to Mappoint is that it updates at any interval you select, + it adds re-routing, voice routing and directions, and multiple waypoints. And for the few $ it costs over Mappoint, it is something that MS should have thought of adding either to Mappoint, or as a default in S&T/Autoroute.
