uhh... I'm more for hacking existing map sources then to write our on maps. There would never be enough critical mass to make maps detailed enough that anyone would want to use them.

I really don't care to much about point by poing directions myself so if I could just use the maps that MS Streets and Trips 2004 uses I would be satisfied. I tried to install it the other night using wine but it complained about not being the correct windows version. I'll have to play around with it more.

Here's a vector-based GPS software w/voice. It uses TIGER data so it's only useful in the U.S. no routing yet- but getting there.

Right but even when they do add in routing it will be limited by the underlying limitations in the TIGER data. TIGER data is missing information on one ways. It cannot be used to trivially distinguish over/under passes from intersections -- though they claim that this data will be included in future releases. It's missing speed limit information so estimates of fastest route would based purely on road type attributes. Road type attributes are not consistent. Road naming is not consistent.

Why can't we build an open source application that can read, display and use a commercial map set from one of the many vendors out there. We have the open source app, and pay for up to date map databases.

Most people out there are willing to pay for an accurate map database.

Open source software with accessible Navteq data will NEVER happen. I guarantee that every vendor that distributes Navteq data is under a contractual obligation not to make this data accessible in any sort of vector format. Navteq cannot rely on copyright laws to protect them because it does not apply to factual data.

That's correct.
That's why the http://www.openstreetmap.org project was started
