Which GPS will hibernate?

I've got an Earthmate and it crashes win xp home after I come out of hibernate and start up Destinator. I'm guessing a serial unit would work better for hibernating. Any suggestions?

Earthmate works OK for me with StreetAtlas and USB drivers. I tried the serial drivers briefly. I had to restart the GPS when using serial, but I didn't play with it much and may have gotten it to work. I may try some more so that it can work with Streets & Trips too.

What did you do to restart the GPS? My experience has been that GPS start once Destinator is launched. Let me know and I'll play with it.

I have found been doing some testing with the Haicom-202 USB GPS device as it appears to stop responding when the machine resumes from hibernation.

Using hyperterminal on w2k for simplicity I set it running and could see the gps data streaming in. I hit the power button to hibernate and then powered the PC back on.

Hyperterminal justs sits there on the last statement to reach it. However if I disconnect and reconnect within Hyperterminal the Streaming resumes.

So. question is how can I mimic this re-establish that hyperterminal is doing as moving on to using Autoroute or Route66 these two bits of software also appear to halt in receiving GPS info when resumed from hibernation but need the entire machine to be shutdown and restarted to get the link back. Just quiting out of them and restarting isn't enough????

I'll see if I can duplicate this on my setup. Atleast its faster than a full reboot. Here's the response I received from Delorme's tech support about the earthmate not coming out of hibernate:

Thank you for the email. Do not put the machine into hibernation. This
function was useful in the older versions of Windows to speed up boot up
time. On a new XP machine a cold startup should be comparable. If you need
further assistance please reply to this email.

What great support

Hyperterminal just locks up my computer like the GPS programs do.

Well you can't really get much simpler than hyperterminal so I'd say that the Earthmate really doesn't like hibernate at all.

I know its sounds strange but can you try the following

Startup your GPS program.
Once its receiving GPS info pull the GPS device out. You will get a warning message about disconnecting a USB device so just acknowledge it.
Hibernate and then resume your PC.

This should show one of two things. Either it comes up cleanly and hence the GPS device is at fault for the lockup, or it doesn't and that would indicate you winXP + GPS software combo is at fault.

You could also try (if not already known) just starting up your PC without the GPS device attached, loading your GPS sofware, hibernating and then restoring to see if that works. If that locks up then is definately not your GPS device.
