Does a GPS receiver have to be mounted horizontally?

If a receiver is mounted at say 45 degrees to the horizontal, would that reduce it's signal strength?

I have just ordered the eBay GPS, but looked in my car and the stealthiest place would be on the rear shelf at an angle.

You will probably find that yes, it will reduce it's capabilities. It will potentially block out half the sky from getting a signal. The best way will be to put it horizontally, and without anything blocking it.

I am considering getting one of those "shark fins" to put on the roof of my car, painted the same colour, like they have on newer cars with GPS, which will allow it to see the entire sky

Mine works great at left hand side of the dashboard under the windshield.
