RAND McNally and Map Point 2004 - anyone got it working?

Hi all, I am having a small issue,
I have hooked up my gps to the pc and using Hyperterminal i am able to read NMEA sentences just fine, everything works.
when i hook it up to Map point 2004, it says "Initializing" and it never finds the current location,
Map Point states that the gps reciever must be NMEA 2.0 compatible and i did check the reciever specs, it says its NMEA 2.0 compatible.
i am just wondering waht i am doing wrong.
i do no thave any other software other than map point to test it
if anyone had issues, assistance would be appreciate it

How do you connect the gps to the pc - is it usb or serial? If usb, do you have a usb-serial driver that makes it appear on a comport? Mappoint needs to see the gps on a comport.

the gps is serial,
and yes the map point sees the port because when i go to "configure GPS" it lists the port the gps is on, so it has no problem detecting that there is a communication port that is avaialbe (and only shows it if gps is connected)
the problem is that map point is not getting the signals

I notice you have been configuring your software over and over, have you actually configured your GPS to send out NMEA instead of whatever the default is? Example: My Garmin by default is NOT NMEA, it is a Garmin protocal. so it only works with my Garmin Map Source CD's I purchased.

What do the strings look like in HyperTerminal?

I've found MapPoint to be fairly picky, it likes a very good lock before it is happy to show position. Did your GPS come with any test program? Mine (Deluo) has a test app, I guess it should be generic, you might want to grab it from their web site and try it.

You did close down HyperTerminal I assume... apps don't like to share serial data.

Chris.
